Okuma Makaira Blue Surf Spin vs Okuma Mariana Spin

The Makaira rods definitely feel a little heavier stiffer in the blank. The 6 to 8oz is very much a non Ed rod. The 4 to 6 though is a great rod, Mariana is better but Makaira are great value.

Thanks for the info Don. in the end i went with an Assasin Championship edition #5. I hope i made a good choice. isnt much info on them except from Assasin themselves or Assasin testers etc.

Assassins, are in general great rods, always finished nicely and good suitable crisp blanks. To tell you the truth I havent seen a bad assassin rod. Though I am a blue marlin guy LOL, the assassin surf rods that I've fished with have been an absolute pleasure to cast and fish.

Have been fishing a Makaira 14.6ft 6-8oz for the past 2 years. Using it as both a eds & non-eds rod. When targeting eds and not much action, just bump up to bigger baits for the odd gully shark. A bit of overkill for Eds, but a good all-rounder for me for eds / non-eds. A 'one-rod' set-up when going remote rocky areas, where one need to travel as light as possible (not carrying multiple rods, etc.)

What are the actual difference between these rods Makaira, Marianna, Precision etc. Same with Assassin, so many rods in the same class but the price point differs substantially and it seems every year or less they push out the new latest edition... how much can rod tech advance in one year, year on year?

Good Question. Also have a okuma Metaloid 13.6ft from a couple of years back, still in use... there's been couple of iterations of the metaloid rods, but as you say, what's different? I normally buy once-off and use a rod till it breaks (if possible these days) :). If rod not damaged / broke, why replace it?

Sorry just coming back in on this thread, I’ve been using a 13ft Metaloid and 14ft Makaira for a few years. Generally happy with them. Okuma is excellent value for what you get but I’m not too impressed with casting ability. I’m keen to try either a Bluefish Zero, Hearty Rise Tanoshi or Okuma Precision. I’m leaning towards the Bluefish. Strictly for edibles and mostly off the surf with occasional sessions of the bricks.

Zeebo, I will recommend the BlueFish Zero 14,6FT (3-5oz) The 13ft (2-4oz) is to soft and brilliant from the rocks. The 3-5oz can catch anything eat-able, I recommend the 14,6ft and you can nicely pair it with a Spinfisher VI 6500 or (the best value for money reel = the new Spheros 8000) ..........(or the Saragozza 10 000)

I get 100m+ with a 4oz clipon sinker and worm or prawn .... Im 63 yrs old....
The bluefish zero is the best rod for those who looks for something in the R3600 range.

I only order online from Bilimoria, they are brilliant and no one can beat their prices. (Free delivery to your door) If you order in the morning, you get it 2 days later)
