Head vs Fillet vs Whole Fish

Which is more advisable, i dont fish often but i have had more success with using a whole fish for bait.

What is more advisible for the vaaldam, and also what species of fish?

I usually use the whole fish, and pierce the body a few times.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

My preferred bait is a whole fish but with the tail and fins cut off. I also damage the gills with a knife and smash the head to let the extra juices out. For the Vaal I would use Muddies as bait.

i saw the following on a sea fishing show which i would like to try this year...

take a carp head and wrap it with a fillet of the same carp on one side of the head, inside of the fillet to be on the outside, basicly skin to skin... wrap it with those stretching nylon which the sea guys use... then hook the head normally...

like i said, only saw them rigging it like this, still have not tried it myself...

This seems like a good idea.I think you can also wrap the guts for more flavour?

Tried it at Krugersdrift dam and works very nice! What i do however is cut the gilplates open and only wrap a fillet with gusts on the one side of the head. I then use a 12/0 sicle hook through both lips to make sure the bait does not fall off when casting. I am useing this bait on competition days when one is not allowed to take ur baits in with a boat ect.

@ joekin, size the bait for the size fish you want to catch. If there are 20kg plus beast in the water go for skuimkop's whole fish. The only change I would make is to cut out the gill plate on one side of the head, will release a lot more scent into the water. If you are targeting 10kg and up I would use a fish cut in half with the cut made right through the guts. I have had a much higher strike rate on half fish. As to what type of fish to use, try identify what are the most common species in the water. The most abundant fish will be the fish that the cats are feeding on the most and will be your best bait. Carp will always work as does tilapia.

And how about injecting the fish with oxblood dip??

20kg barbel, would a shimano alveo 13" graphite be able to handle that??
