Quirimbas Reports

Right, so after having started nearly 4 months ago as GM of a private island in the Quirimbas Archipelago I thought I would start a thread on some of our fishing adventures we have out here.

I thought this will be an ideal situation to start is as we have our regular group of fisherman in camp.

7/01/14: Morning Session started off ok and we managed to catch 4 geets. Nothing big though, all between 80 - 94cm. We have experienced very heavy winds the last 10 days so we were forced to fish the sheltered bays.

Afternoon session was fairly quiet, a couple boils but nothing stuck. We tried to get out to see but where chased back very quickly with a big swell and gale force winds.

08/01/14: Morning session started off with not a breath of wind so we decided that we would make a run for some of the shelves we fish in the open sea. We first stopped off at one of the deep drop-offs just off the island as we know there are big Geets here. First drift, popper gets pulled just as a monster of a gt tries to swallow it! Two more drifts and two more big boils we figured we should head off and try the outer ledges. First spot yielded a small 80cm GT, we then decided to move further south and try for a few doggies. Stick baits out, within 5 minutes we had one of about 12kg on. Nice fight, onto the boat and off to fight another day. Wind started to pick up quite strong by now so we casted for another half hour. We had some spectacular takes from the doggies but nothing wanted to stick. We decided to leave so that we could make the long run back.

Mid day session, did a quick session, and this was the start of the good fish coming out. Although only one fish was landed, we had many more big boils. Our activities manager went tight with a good fish and after a solid 20min fight brought a very nice 120cm gt to the boat. It was a great moment for as this is currently his PB.

Evening session, headed out for an afternoon session. We got two BUS big eyes and a few small geets and then one of our guests had his plug sucked in by a monster fish! Stella 10 000 with the upgrade went screaming off even thought the drag know could go no tighter. Then all of a sudden SLACK! Reel in nd the 80lb braid had snapped! WHat a bummer as this was a seriously good one!

09/01/14: Morning session was ok and we boated several geets up to 95cm. Nothing too spectacular.

Lunch time session something crazy happened, We are pulling poppers and we see a marling following one. immediately switch over to stick baits. Our one guest casts in his little bopara 100 and goes tight!!! Big pull! We know this is going to be a good fish! A proper fight and one very tired angler and we get the fish closer to the boat. We see that its not one but two fish! And two good fish! One is a good gt of 120cm and on the other hook a grouper of about 20kg! I have seen double hook ups before on the same lure but they are usually much smaller fish. We land a couple more smaller gt's after this and retire back to the resort.

Evening session, this was one of the most frustratin sessions I have personally ever had. We landed a nice fish of 104cm early on and then I proceeded to have 12 hits and not one fish stick! Very frustrating as they were mostly very good fish!

10-01-14: Morning session started with a bang, my second cast of the first drift and a good fish stuck! After being dragged around the boat several times we boated it, a nice 121cm fish! Certainly made me forget the evening I had before. The rest of the day was pretty quiet with not much action.

Right so been a bit slack and haven't posted any more photos. Geets have been thick and managed to sneak a few trips out with the staff.

We also took the girls fishing and they both hooked into fish. They always wondered why we were so tired when we got back! They also have serious respect for these guys!

Great stories there, do you have a website for guests to check out as I'm looking into a Mozambique trip for a few guests later in the year?

Went out last Friday for a quick hours session. Had quite a bit of action with some of the smaller geets then decided to go and try a spot close to the lodge for 2 quick drifts at sunset. Although we don't get the numbers out of this spot, all fish are a very good size! First cast of the first drift and had a bus of a fish smash my Halco. It quickly stripped line off of the stella, I tightened up all the way but there was no stopping it. Slack line, REEFED! Super bummed and not keen to tie on another leader we left for home.

On Sunday the girls were keen to have a quick snorkel at one of the reefs. I decided I would take the rod along and seek revenge on the beast from Friday. A couple misses early on and then VAS! After a good fight had it at the boat. A nice111cm FL. Not the giant I was after but still a very good fish!
