Hi All,

Myself and a friend want to go down to durban for a long weekend fishing trip during June/july sardine run, i have been searching the internet for accomodation with no luck, we would like to camp right next to a river preferably close to the river mouth the idea is to be able to fish 24/7 eg tent throwing ditance from the lagoon/river... I see so many river/lagoons and can hardly find any campsites right on the river/lagoon, anyone know of a nice safe spot that we looking for we would really apriciate it allot, preferably no crocodiles as well :)
Pls Message me
Thank Anton and Rhuan

Look up Bazley Beach - has excellent Camping facilities - but oustside Durban - South Coast - also try Hibberdene ( Not on a river ) and Rocky Bay - all on the South coast.

Hi Victorius,

Thanks for the quick responce, my first choice was Mac Nicols Bazley beach Scottburgh... For now i will considder this, but i know their campsites dont stretch all the way to the waters edge, even if its a log cabin right on a river doesnt have to be durban, durban surrounds it will also be fine we would like to be able to fish during the night where we sleep...Do you have any idea how good the fishing is at Nicola`s campsite...

Rocky bay looks just as amazing, how`s the fishing there between june and july during sardine run off the rocks infront of the camp site?

Rocky Bay sites that on right on the beach are as far I know only rented to caravans. Bazley is right on the river but about 700m from the beach. Scottburgh Municipal caravan park is also very close to the beach as is Ifafa carvan park.Just be careful fishing at night where ever you go. The wall at Rocky Bay (next to the skiboat launch) is a popular fishing spot during Shad and Sardine season.

Hi Plugger,

Thanks for the advice and info, why should we be carefull at night anywhere around there? Does this include Nicola`s campsite next to the lagoon?

Night fishing can be dangerous at most places on the Natal coast, safety in numbers.Fishermen have been attacked and mugged . Not trying to scare you off but I would only fish at night at Mapelane or Cape Vidal. I'm not familiar with Nicolas.

@alombard to me your best bet is happy wandereres caravan park, its right on the beach has camping spots and probably the safest beach to fish at night and the fishing is good that time of year, and if the weather is crap for fishing you will have a blast at the wrecked heron, very festive,if you can't get a spot there then try next door at vulamanzi, they have log cabins and just a short walk over the railway lines to the beach.

My beach cottage overlooks the  lagoon. The river is often closed but the guys from the caravan park dig it open when the river backs up too much. I am proberly going down this weekend but that wont give any indication of what it will be like next week even.  There are often fishermen on the beach all night but I have not tried it myself. Its a relativly safe area because there are not any shops etc there.

Happy Wanderers is a great spot in the sardine run, they net there almost every year, from big skates, sharks and edibles.

There chalets are awesome, they are on the beach...
