Ive got 3 shimano torium reels. All their drags have packed up at least twice as well as various problems with their clutch mechanisms. Is this just me or has anyone else had problems and if so any recommendations?

not yet. my Reel will be going to Keith Murison for the leather washers and modified shaft.

quite a number of guys in our club take our reels to Keith to be serviced and repaired/modified

I have actually just sent my reel in today to get it modified/upgraded. Do the guys say that this makes a big diference to casting etc?

Personally i think the difference is all in the mind....have you seen the difference between a modified shaft and the origional..................not a hell of alot!!!

that is what it eventually boils down to. having that extra fresh bait, having a much better knot than the next oke. small things that make a big difference in the end

Modifying the shaft will have absolutely no effect on casting performance. How can it when the spool and drive train sub assemblies are seperate entities?

The mod referred to here is basically replacing the bush at the base of the shaft with a bearing as per the Trinidad series. All this really does is cut down wear at the base of the shaft. It also seems to have an effect on smoothness.Anyway my wife seems satisfied.....Ag hell!My mind wandered off there for a minute. We were speaking about reels were'nt we?Sorry!

Seriously though,I still maintain that most of the problems encountered with reel performance are due to lack of maintenance.A well maintained reel should not need any weird modifications. After all,its the angler who catches the fish.

That is true, but it isnt always possible to compete with the big boys unless you can match them in tackle tactics. Fight fire with fire.

Guys i fish a lot...........my reels get hammered but i need them to operate flawlessly. This means that in season i get them serviced almost once a month. And if that means replacing bearings so be it.
