Problems with my GPS / Fishfinder

I have a Garmin 420S GPS on my boat. Something is up with this thing - it seems to work when it wants to! It works fine for a hour or so and then it goes off. You can't switch it on. Then, after some time, you can again. This is so frustrating!

What is the best way to go about addressing this problem? I can't afford to buy a new one at the moment so I need to get this one fixed / looked at.

Can you point me in the right direction?

I have a 525s, my first one kept on overheating, you can actually feel the screen get extremely hot then cuts out. Eventually took it back to Garmin (in Muizenberg) and they send it to the factory, about a month later I reveived a brand new one in the post. Still working fine today. They told me there was a problem with some of the screens.

Check yours for the same symptoms.

Usually caused by poor or loose connections. These things are very sensitive.

Check all connections, check battery. If all good, try re-booting the the unit back to factory settings. I'm not familiar with Garmin but I'm sure you can.

Thanks... I will check the batteries tonight, when I get home. I don't think it is an overheating issue - I was testing it at home the other evening and had it on for more than two hours... no issues. I was programming waypoints. At sea, different story!

Hi guys,
Just some feedback: I checked the batteries - they are 100%. I put the GPS on and then followed the cables back towards the unit. As I got under the front console, the unit went off. I eventually found that the inline fuses were dodgy. I bought new inline fuses and bullet connectors and cut off the old stuff, replacing with the new. Did the whole tidy up thing (cable ties) and couldn't get the GPS to switch off again.
I think I solved the problem - the big test is on Sunday. I hope to take her out to sea again (launching Miller's).
Thanks to everyone for their advice.
:)

P.S. The picture is of the new fuses, before I cable tied them neatly up behind the console.

smeer silicone oor hulle om corosion te keer anders gaan hulle daai wit poeier aanslaan van die sout lug

net oor die connectors waar jy gelas het mens kan darem die fuses altyd skoon krap
