Hi Everyone.

I will be visiting the Wavecrest Beach Hotel & Spa one of these fine Winter weekends and would like to do some light tackle boat fishing, strictly weigh & release, in the two rivers that converge in front of the hotel. I am looking for some hot spots I can try out in the two rivers. Does anyone have a few places & some tips for me?

Thanks.

PS - I would like target as many species as I can.

Right slap bang in the river mouth. Put a live bait out (about a 5 meter cast), place your rod in the rod holders provided and have a seat on the bench, also provided.

Keep your eyes on the rod, every time's a coconut and it happens quickly! I have never pulled a live bait back in sitting there. River Snapper, Silver Steenbras, Cob, Grunters. They all there in numbers. My old man even got a massive sandshark on a live bait and 6ft estuary rod. Kept him busy for a while.

The only thing is on light tackle you battle to turn the fish. 2/3 hookups end up getting snapped up in the bricks.

The southern river (on the left as you go up) is the better of the two. There is a hole in front of where the first creek comes in on the left that is good. Otherwise quite far up some rocks visible on the right hand side, a good area for river snapper.

Cool, I look forward to hearing about it. Also, as RobG says, the block at the river mouth from just after low tide on an incoming is a great spot. You can throw spoon, plug and dropshot there as well as livebait. I have caught many nice kob off that block, and some beaut garrick and shad as well.
Any livies work, but I have done best with mullet or little Cape Stumpnose which are easy to catch in the river on mudprawn. I prefer to fish the livies on the outgoing tide and spin on the incoming.

The river also fishes well when the tide is dropping, about 2 hours after full tide. Don't be afraid to go as high up that left hand river as you can get, then fish your way down.

It is a great hotel and a wonderful area. I hope you have a cracker trip!

Hey g-man i once put out a live bait there by the chair(fighting chair)there is a small hole there and bang i was on with a big leerie.

If you go up river between the mangroves you will see the fish under the boat its amazing.

for R&S fishing right of the hotel there is a path that goes over the rocks to a cement block try thet spot early morning.

Next to the landing strip there is a jeep track follow it and you will end up at a small bay, great for hotties, shad, cob ect.

hope you have a great time there i know i did cheers.:wfish

Hello
Guys well sound like a great place, I want to book a week in November, but I have a big boat 21ft cabin Flamingo 21-6 is the rivers suitable for big boats to fish? Really look nice this place.
How far it from is garages for fuel and Bait shops, and does it accommodate for keeping bait and fish on the site in the chalets at Wavecrest?
Never been there before but looks good.
Any Help on this will be appreciated

It is a very small river and you will find it difficult to launch the boat there. I always use my small inflatable and dont have problems getting over the sandbanks to the top parts of the rivers. The dirt  road to the hotel was scraped last year November and it was a pleasure to drive (Was there in December/Jan).  Kentane is the closest town and it is about 45 minutes drive away, depending on road conditions.
Great Hotel, great people and great fishing!!

I have never been there in November, only mid December to mid January. The hotel has canoe's that guests can use (free of charge) and it is magic to paddle up the river and you see and hear so much.
I have been to Mazeppa, which is a few kms' up the road, in November and the fishing wasn't  to bad, apparently not the best time of the year but hey it beats a day at the office!!
Live bait will get you cob and Garrick and they are not too difficult to catch in the estuary.

From Wavecrest Facebook page- 22 August
Last week a 4kg Kob was caught in the river. Earlier this week 6kg Kob was caught just off the jetty, against the rock near the channel marker light. A nice leervis was seen chasing mullet late yesterday afternoon in crystal clear water by one of our guests. Water temp warm 20+ celcius. No chance of fishing The Block this morning, too many dolphins very close inshore!!!

I have been going there for many years - just booked our trip for next year April.

The Southern river has good spots to fish - a drop off starts after thrid inlet on RH side which connects to northern river. First and second inlets from LH aide just further up also fish well. As Tommo said, row up and drift back with the tide throwing dropshot and towing a pilchard bait. Guaranteed a few cob.

Northern river fishes well from the jetty on RH side behind dune till about 1km further up. Even small (6kg) GT's have been caught in this river.

Your can also throw for swimming prawn in the right season - killer bait and good to eat.

Finckle Island is good to keep the youngsters amused with tonnes of little fish (good live bait for the block) but I have caught good river bream, snapper and cob from this point as well. Just as the tide starts to push upriver, fish off the rocks that get exposed in front of the pub until the water chases you off- there are some great holes that deliver big stumps - 35cm.

A simple request WRT the river - please C&R as much as possible as the river is only just getting better after the mouth opened up last season.

Spinning from the block has rarely yeilded a blank - spoon and dropshot. Cob from 4-12kgs. There are very good reef fish spots south of the hotel along the coast as well.

If you dont mind a good walk the rocky point at the end of the beach fishes well ont the push - lots of Bronze bream, cob and cracker. Get a packed lunch from the hotel and spend the day up there. The bay around the corner also produces very well.

Tight lines and please post pics and a report!!

Well guys what an experience at wave crest Hotel, it was so Relaxing and the people there are out of this world helpful and always smiling, the staff are great and will defiantly go there again.
From Home to wave crest is a long Push over a 1200KM from Vaal marina, but at the end it was worth the long haul the road are not that great from Umtata to Were you turn onto the sand road to Wavecrest, the gravel road is better than same places on the Tar road.
The Accommodation is great, food good and the bar and People there are stunning, swimming Pool.
Well you all waiting to hear about the fishing well November I suppose is not the best month with the inland raining and most rivers running into the sea making it look like a dam, but the one by Wavecreast was clear, no big fish in the week were done there but we did get a few Sand Sharks from the block and also in the river, on the left of the rocks, buy the wooden walkway.
Ons small salmon Kabejou as they say, 400mm came out als on the block, and that was about it.
We toke a drive up to Mazepa for the day to have a look there and the wind was Pumping heavy and had the honors of meeting the guys there from ASFN while they were Fishing for Sharks, Johan Beukes when he caught a nice big Raggie I would say about ±130kg and then a second one was caught by their other member of there team it took Johan ±1 ½ hours with his and the second guy 2 hours easily.
As I said I will definitely be going again, but will take a small boat with a 5hp motor to go up river and drift back I am sure we will get some big fish.
I have added a few pictures of Wave crest and Mazepa, Thanks to all the gave me input of the Great place, Tight lines to All my Fellow Sealine Friends.
Cobus thanks for the Tips, and Fishing places.
Pictures are in no specific order, o yes the Gravel road to Mazepa is not as good as the one to wave crest Had a blow out on that road, so drive with care that way.

THANKS FOR THE HELP WITH GETTING THE PHOTO's LOADED.

All just remember the closest town is 36km away, so if you intend going to wave crest try take all you need with you as the resources out there are minimum, there is freezer for bait and the od fish, but they prefer for the guest to Catch and release.

Enjoy :kaykak
