Any GT fundis out there?

Hi all. Just got a beautiful 112cm FL GT on popper yesterday. Sadly the poor chap didn't make it - engulfed the whole lure and the hooks ripped up his gills. Seems to happen when they hit the lure while it is stationary on the surface just after landing. Truly heartwrenching! Anyway, does anyone have any idea what this magnificent beast would weigh? Felt like 45kg+ but it was 40 odd degrees and he put up a major fight - last cast of the day too, so I was truly buggered!

That is a fantastic catch, what popper where you using.

The Ori fish calculator puts it at 27kg, not your 40kg but an awesome fish none the less

"So you are telling us that with your left arm you can lift +45Kg?"

Yup! It took my bud and the skipper to pull the fish out. You might notice (or not) on the photo (from a crackberry, unfortunately) that I am leaning back and that the fish is tight against my body, so that's how I managed to hold it. Not trying to boost the size but I have landed a couple in the 30kg region and this one was on a totally different level. He was really round! If this one was 27kg then my other two were only 13-15kg. The blokes that rated my other two fish, fish professionally for GT in the Musandam, Southern Oman..... Just makes me want to go and catch a +50kg one! Hopefully the next one won't get wounded. Below a 30kg??

I guess you might not be that far from the real weight (I do not trust a lot of ORI measurements)

This is 76lb (34,47Kg) on a 15lb weight fly rod (weighted)

And this is a 38Kg one

Both no wide angle pics and the first one also near the body of the angler

This is a 48Kg but the Angler is a girl, the current record holder on 130lb line women division, her size might fool us on the pic.

Ja, I suppose one should just be happy with a length measurement because photos can be quite deceiving. My handicap, with regards to photos, is that I am a big guy (6'4"). Having said that, the dude in the second photo may be standing behind the fish but his hand around the penduncle gives some idea as to the its size - unless of course he has really small hands. I suppose that is why some men prefer small women.:)

Congratulation with your catch ,

Black GT is said to be in the mating cycle , some may have eggs in them so they tend to fight harder , according to the Japanese fishhing buddies of mine who are really into studying GT in a great depth . By the way , 40 kg is a qualified guesstimate .

Nice fish!

As Fedu says, not the weight that matters, I reckon that the length only calculation is not very accurate, one needs to include the girth, some are short and stocky other long and skinny some are long and stocky!!

Nice Catch - where did you get it?

Here is a record of GT's I've caught, measured and weighed, for a comparison.

87cm = 18kg

104cm = 25kg

117cm = 35kg

The fish was caught in the Musandam, Oman. Definitely a place to see. Thanks for sending on your size chart. A new camera with a wide angle lense is definitely on the cards as is a diet!:)

LOL, no wide lens or diet is going to "save" my catches, this one is shurely near the 15 weight range.....

15 centigrams weight :)

P.S. - Dingle do not worry about weight just worry about having fun while fishing and taking good pictures of your captures, I agree some wide lens pictures are quite nice.
