Assassin Rods

Hi Guys,

I'm in the process of buying a new rod. I've Seen the Assassin range at Basil Manning. I am looking at buying either a Standard BLADE or a HMG BLADE. I would be targeting large non-edibles(and edibles) especially. I also fish competetively.

I have heard that the HMG rods are a bit too stiff, also casting requires "BACK BREAKING" effort. I have also heard that these rods are brittle 'cos of the type of graphite used, thus susceptible to breakage(from knocks & bumps)

I would be using either my Torium 30(600m 45lb braid, 0.50 Kingfisher HI abrasion) or my Saltist 50(600m 45lb braid, 0.47 Double X HI abrasion) reel on the rod.

Any input or advise from anglers using these rods would be much appreciated.

from personal experience i would say go with the standard blade

i own both the hmg and standard blades i love them both buyt as u said the hmg blade is verry dificult to cast with.it wil take u a long time to master it as i have had it fur 3 years now and still havent mastered it.

as for the pulling power i dont think there is any other rod which comes close but so for fighting a big sandy or massive skate it will out class all other rods.

with all that said the standard blade is indeed the better of the two because its simply easy to through with and also has sufficiant pulling power so u can turn the fish quicker.

the reel u wana use tn30 is excellent that is what i have on my standard blade and it a balanced outfit .

hope thats helps .....

cheers riymos

Hey trev..be sure off wat fish u gonna be targeting else the blade might be overkill to fish with...it like bringing a bazooka to a stick fight..simply to much muscle overpowers the fish an u loose the aspects off the fight..choose carefully...

Jus another piece off help for ya trev's...if u buying on a budget an looking for good value for money then take a trip down to tackle centre an enquire about their new 3pc heavy hmg which fully built comes in under R2800... If u serious they will let u demo the spare unit they have at the shop for a day or 2, i tested it out an can swear that a 9oz sinker does not flex the tip when at rest, its an extremely balanced rod and makes a perfect swim live bait swim stick... Good luck mate..

Hi Guys

Thanks for the input. I will be targeting mainly in-edibles with this rod, thats why i'm looking for something heavy. Going to try a Standard & HMG Blade this weekend, just to get a feel of the rods.

Think i will give the Tackle Centre guys a shout, then make up my mind.

Thanks again

Trev I see you fish with a Poseidon XH - Is that not an HMG rod?

Apparently the new Shimano Exage 1468 is now HMG too, at less than half the cost of an Assassin... something to consider? They say though that it's hard to beat the Assassin HMG's??

The good old assassins off a few years ago where really the dog's bollock's in terms off strength an power, thats also the same time they came with the lifetime warranty...off recent i seen more factory faults with them though..seems production quality is looking sketchy!..on a personal side I have finalised my purchase off a S6 heavy hmg..counting the days i can get it..truely cant wait!

aweh...... Master im officially offended now..... you would rather be slid out with an S6 than my Blade?:tissue

Eugene..if i wanted a lightpole to fish with i would tow one out with my utility...hehehe...for me the s6 makes a better option..this one came down to personal choice...

Yep i did bru..the guys at tackle center were kind enough to let me demo it for almost 2 weeks! I didn't wanna give it back! The most enjoyable part was they asked me to pls try an break the demo unit..kinda crazy but when i tried and couldn't it got me sold! And i know its not an import blank! Now jus to afford another reel to match with the rod!..donations to a welcome cause is appreciated!
