Hi i would like to know what i have to do to make a live bait well in my garden...

I would mainly want to keep Shad and mullet alive in two seperate compartments obviously...

What do I need? and how long do you keep the fish in the well before replacing the salt water with new salt water??

what do you feed your fish etc etc....and do they lay eggs while in the tank?

i did a search but can't really get what i want...

just toying with the idea...

thanx

any feedback would be appreciated

Klipvissie, to keep a live well at home is going to require a couple of things, an aerator, protein skimmer, water pump, big enough tank.

I know there were discussions on the forum but just cant find the link right now.

maybe some of the other guys can remember it.

I recall being part of a discussion about somebody who wanted to keep sea lice "in stock" as bait. This was about a month ago on SEALINE.

I had a saltwater tank once and consider the following:

Isolated seawater starts to degenerate after a couple of hours due to all the living organisms in the water dying off.

Due to the vastness of the sea, the chemical composition of the water is very constant. You have to maintain that composition because our friends in the sea are adapted to that.

The balance of the salinity has to be watched carefully.

You need a permit to catch and keep saltwater fish. Minimum .5m3 in volume but can be subjected to inspection by the authorities prior to populating such tank.

It is very expensive to keep a saltwater tank.

Sorry to be negative, but maybe the guys on the current fish-tank thread can enlighten us more.

Granted: some fish like cob and mullet are very tolerant to the variations in salinity

A protein skimmer bets rid of the sh....t in the water.

The ideal pumps are powerheads.

It is a submersable pump and it does more volume than pressure.

You can use a drip filter too, depending on the time you want to keep the fish.

PE has a marine aquirist society and they are very helpful.
