Yeah they work. They are called "thimbles" not sure who makes them, but you can get them from Tackle stores..... in Pta I know FPS sell them.

HiSeas tackle makes them...

Most tackle stores should have them in the Offshore section

I use them on my swim bait traces.

They are called thimbles and are mostly used on off shore rigs.

Yup, these are being used more and more in the Jigging and Popping world... many of the decent Solid rings, eg the Owners - are not round, but oval. Tieing large diameter leaders to terminal tackle is very difficult at the best of times, but to complicate matters, the solid rings tend to bite into the leaders, so thimbles are now used...

a straw will probably be a bit thin, ive seen some guys use the plastic that goes around these say 3-4mm electrical wire, these thumbles are not expensive and its just way easier to use them than try and make something up

Try using the plastic tube from an ear bud, cut it in half to make 2 thimbles. Thread your line through the middle and then kink it to make the loop and then you can tie the knot. Works very well. I find the Johnson & Johnson blue ear buds work best.

Got this idea from an old Protea Deep sea angler
