Mozambique trip

I'm planning to go explore southern Mozambique(south of Maputo) in September.

I will be looking at 2 accomodation types:
1 Camping
2 Self catering

Can you please suggest good camping spots and self catering places anywhere from Ponto du Oura to Santa Maria.

Nice to have would be good R&S fishing spots close by and possible a fishing charter.

I will be at Ponta from 17 Oct to 23 Oct taking a Kosicat from P.E. Looking for some co-ordinates to fish and can forward places to stay shortly

Hi WOERMAN

There is plenty places to stay at Ponta but you can also camp. The camping site is nice right on the beach but the ablutions is not so great. Stay away over long weekends as they run into water shortages because of too many people.

Excellent self catering accommodation is at www.cocorico.co.za.

The divecamps also have self catering accommodation like Simply Scuba 011-6780972/3  

There are many more places to stay at but I do not have their info with me. 

If you need Coordinates there was a previuos thread un der Ponta Coordinates with the best reefs in the area.

Try coraldev.com  or 011 425-2866  Elsie    They have camping and chalets ,each campsite has it's own ablutions.   The rock and surf is awsome because of the huge reef structure offshore.   I just wish I could get booking's there for Dec

"Woerman" I second "BigVan" on the Cocorico Bay Resort.

Worth its money once you arrive there and compare to the other places!!!!!

Easy launch site too.

Will PM some grids tomorrow

Hi, we also want to go camping in Ponta in October. Out of season. Wanted to go to the campsite at du ouro bay. Nice for boat launching. Will cost us R700 / night for 4 adults and 3 children between 5 and 7 years old. This is out of season, but they charge in season prices for all thursday to saturday nights and children 5 and up pay full adults rates. Sunday to wednesday they charge us R595. This is very expensive for camping without trees and suspect ablutions and out of season. Does anyone know of any better campsites in ponta du ouro who charges normal rates?

How is the R&S fishing around Cocrico resort?  I'm asking because I will not have a boat there.

Also, are there any charter companies around that area?

Hi Woerman

All the fishing spots is within walking distance for R&S fishing. The bay is 400m, the rocks 800 m. There is charters there but check out they are expensive. There is a crowd called Gozo Azul which I reckon knows the fishing the best there. Other guys also operating with a Seacat boat but I cant remember the name. I am at Ponta 13-20 November and you are welcome to fish with us.

BV I Have never been down South. Whats the best and quickest road to Ponta? Travel Time with the boat at the back say from Nelspruit.

I would travel through Swaziland if I was travelling from Nelspruit. I have travelled the road through Swaziland many years ago from Komatipoort (North) to Golela (South) and the road was in a good condition. From Golela you get on the Pongola road to the North Coast. Turn off at the Jozini turn off. Travel over the mountain to Jozini. Turn left over the dam wall carry straight on to the Tjunction. Turn right at T junction and carry on past Kwanganaza until border post. Golden rule after Border post is keep right all the way and you will end up at Ponta. There is many sand roads after the border post and most of them is unmarked. Just keep right.

The other option is to travel to Barberton then Badplaas then Lothair, Amsterdam, PietRetief then Pongola. This will easy add another 150-200km to your trip but more so another 3 hours. They are working on the Piet Retief Pongola road and you can wait for long periods.

Better find out the road condition in Swaziland.

Thanks BigVan, just thought there might be a way through Komatipoort / Maputo to the South. (Actually Looking for a fishing spot close to home....Leave Friday come back Sunday type of thing.)
Travelled through Swaziland - Golel last July, by far a much better option than to try Piet Retief Pongola Jozini. Road a mess with the construction.
