the hooks im planning to use are 6/0 circle`s with mackeral or sandeel dead baits

Hey Tope,

The norm here is to use 0.50 - 0.55mm main line for sliding.
The leader will depend on where you fishing - I would use about 1.0mm as a base point.

I have slid baits successfully on 0.43mm line with 0.80mm leader. Most of the time the guys are burnt off as the bait is often taken before it reaches the sinker. They then strike and end up burning off the main line.

I would suggest you "shake" the rod at least 100 times or so to get the bait out. I would also suggest that when you get a pull you drop your rod and point straight out to sea until the slide reaches the sinker and then you can "strike" - you will feel when it reaches the end.

The most common slide traces I use are 150-200lb steel wire with 2 x 10/0 J Hooks - total of 0.8 - 1.2 meters in length. The length depends on the water.
We also make bite pieces - about 40cm of Nylon coated 90-120lb and then 40-60cm of 1.0mm nylon attached to that and with 2 x 8/0 J Hooks. This type of trace is used for the smaller sharks and some of the smaller "Flat" fish and only when the water is very clean and calm.

Hope this helps a little.

im looking at our tope which wary between 30lbs and 50lbs, i was told by the place i bought the sliders from that 0.31/15lbs whould be ok ? this is the normally used line we use for normal fishing ie with pulley rigs and 6oz grip leads, big i see what you meen by burning off i can go thicker line but i would be lacking with distance ? i have .050/35lbs ultima f1 on a slosh30 and suffix 0.45/25lbs , which i think i will try first
is there any links where i can buy the sliding rigs direct from S/A ?
cheers tope

I would give the recommended line a try first - just take into consideration what I have mentioned about being burnt off. Don't forget that we fish under extreme conditions - big waves, loads of rocks and some really big sharks - like 100-400lb.

There is guy on Sealine called "Khan"  - you can search for him and send him a PM - he has a tackle shop - if he cannot help then I am sure he will direct you to someone who can help.

Curious - are the slides being sold there marketed under Breakaway?
