I want to buy a boat. I Can afford mostly only Cat R registered boats. Can I buy CAT R and register as Cat E or D by only buying more safety equipment and just re-register the boat? Use: Langebaan, Hangklip, Strand. ( sea 1nm, but would like to be able to do 5nm ). Boats mostly available in my budget are 15-17foot. Baronet(mono) Calibre (mono) Skipper ( cathedral hull ) I prefer solid boats ( not rubber ducks ) Currently have a Ark Fishduck + 8hp Mercury 2 stroke. Love the freedom of just going out and not to worry about all the admin. ( in a safe way, I know ). Plan B - upgrade the Ark Fishduck to the Fishalot. Issue is not enough space on the Fishduck for me and my son to fish.

In order to change Category R to E is easy if the boat's buoyancy complies, Cat E to D requirement is radio and safety equipment changes

Main thing is the buoyancy like trier said. Cat R only requires 30% buoyancy if I'm not mistaken. Cat E and D requires 60%+. To redo buoyancy (if you can fit more buoyancy) will cost you a couple of mulas.
