Looking at the Regiment 15' grinder rod.
Rated 2-5oz and its a nice short butt and thin blank. Looks and feels really well balanced.

Does anyone have any experience of this rod?

I'm also looking at the regiment at the moment and would also appreciate any feedback on these rods. They feel really good in hand, and from just holding it in the shop it felt like it had a nice soft action tip if I can call it that. Meaning it will absorb any big head shakes from when fishing braided line. But yeah, we need some feedback since there isn't much reviews or info online.

We got the 13.6ft for my son and will be going to the coast from this Friday, I am also excited to feel the action as it feels really good just holding it and shaking it a bit.  So first cast would be this Friday!

PearlJam,
It looks like you have a few people waiting with bated breath for your feedback on this rod. Good luck for this weekend!

Was in contact with a well known Penn ambassador concerning the very same rod. I was thinking of using it exclusively for targeting steenies at distance. Rod feels spectacular

Thanks.  Will give feedback as soon as I can.  I also have the Makaira that will go for its first outing so are really excited to give the new gear a go

OK, so we went out with our two new rods the Regiment and the Makaira...

This whole short butt fishing rod thing is something to get used to, I don't get the distance yet that I am used to with 11ft rods with the long butt.

Considering the fact that I am useless currently with proper casting, the Regiment still feels very good. So much so that if I can get a 15ft Regiment with a long butt (not sure if that is an option) I would most probably buy that for me.

I am going out again later today and hope I can improve on the casting technique

Thanks for the feedback so far PearlJam. But just to make sure, are you holding the rod the correct way? Because I saw a few guys the past holiday using a short butt rod for the first time, and holding them the same way as they would a long butt rod and they obviously struggled. By that I mean they had their left hand on the very bottom of the rod and thier right hand on the reel holding the line. Basically holding onto 25-30cm piece of the rod trying to throw their bait.

Yes, I have now switched my release hand to the right hand. By the way, this friend of mine bought an Assassin Sabre and did not realise it is short butt even after I asked him and he checked to confirm. Only once I saw the rod and I told him it is in fact a short butt did he know the difference. He might have tried casting with the short piece.

This afternoon session went slightly better with the casting, still not getting the distance but was slightly further. My son with the Regiment managed a quick hookup with a very decent size fish which he got to the rocks and in some way it got off before I got to it. 5 mins after the next cast he hooked up again to a rock cod of about 30 - 35cm and then ended with an eel. I really like the rod, it is just trying to get used to the different casting technique

I know this is an old topic but I had 2 penn regiments 15ft short butt grinder rod's break during a cast. Had a 4 ounce sinker and a small bait. Very upset indeed.
