Comparing destinations

Good day all! I am a western cape fisherman, with experience limited between Cape town and Struisbaai.

We are a group of friends who want to go up to northern natal to fish wih charters for a couple of days in April, and I need advice on which destination to go to.

So far my options are cape vidal, Sodwana and st lucia.

Ps, it is important that there most be decent charters at this location.

Any advice and input would be highly appreciated!

You ever been out on a charter in your home waters when the tuna are running? If it is a slow start to winter and there are nice gaps between the fronts, april can be pretty epic out in the deep..Then a month or 2 when winter has really set in, go to the tropics!

But sorry don't know the destinations you asked about so cant help much there..

For me, Sodwana. Good choice of charters, accommodation, and close runs to fish. My Lady, Mrs Seevarkie, Oom C Breeze etc.

The only downside is the limited options in case of bad weather.

Sodwana is very expensive.
Cape vidal is nice to stay and both deep sea and rock and surf is great on days you cant go out. Limmeted choice of charters.
St lucia plenty charters that run up cape vidal way in any case. Cheaper accomodation.
Long walk to get to the good rock and surf spots. On bad weather days.

St lucia is my back yard.....

so, no charters are operating from Cape Vidal!!!

Johan from Maverick will at times travel to Vidal and launch from there.

thus you only have 2x spots as such

St Lucia has several charters.
all know the area quite well and they have been operating there for ever.

they are,
Asterix, oom Maans
Maverick, Jahan Combrink
wave dancer, Barend
advantage, Danie bennit

there are new guys too, but I do not know them.

Barend is a real business man, quick in and out!!!
get some tuna and back at the office.
the less time spend, the less fuel used, more money in da pocket.

do not see this as bad, he is a good skipper and knows where to fish. he does put people on the fish.
it could be that he is more conservative with fish stock levels and thus the quick in and out.

Johan, they like doing drop shot, at times they tend to beech when it is nearly dark.
so long hours on the water

Asterix, wel oom Maans is great.
he knows the area very well.

advantage, well they are whale watchers during winter months.
during summer months they tend to fish for marlin etc.
so it is basically a add on to their main attraction of whale watching

if your group is ok with being out to see, then a long days fishing might be on your hands.

I do not promote any of the charters specifically.

Sodwanna:
c breeze comes to mind.
see varkie mr and mrs

I do not know them only heard of them

nou ja, genoeg getik.
doen maar nog huiswerk.

sterkte en laat weet hoe dit gegaan het!!!

Seevarkie are legends in Sodwana and they win competitions there. I am more familiar with Sodwana. However, those areas are restricted to game fishing and predominantly good for Marlin. January- March is the best time of year for weather and fishing.
