So yesterday afternoon we decided to shoot through to zini banks to try our luck at catching one of the monster zambos swimming around there, we got there picked our spot, set the swimbait rods up and got to work looking for a suitable swimbait, this took quite long but at about 22:00 I managed to hook a brown ray of about 7kgs perfect swimbait size! It was rigged up and set "free" it did not make it off the bank when BANG chowed and then slack line bitten off above my 4m trace, same thing happened to my mate on a sandy he swam a bit later on, what can we do to prevent thos?

Big Zambies for sure. You may want to swim bigger baits.

Can you explain the complete trace set-up you are using. This may shed some light on the issue.

We swam the baits that we could catch that night the diamonds werent playing along, the trace is simple about 2m of double twisted piano wire to a swivel then another 2m of 250lb carbon coated steel for a bit of protection butthe protection isnt helping because they are getting hold of the 1.2mm leader first

Still not sure what your trace looks like.

Main line(.55?), Bimini(three leg) to 1.8mm leader(attached How?) attached to 250lb nylon coated(attached how?) and then attached to double strand(twisted piano wire).

For what you are targeting I would go heavier tackle for sure.

Loose the Piano wire and the nylon coated trace.

I would go 1.8-2.0 mm wind on leader to 440lb(1.5mm) un-coated cable to the hooks. Simple, strong and effective.

Needless to say rod in hand at all times and although allowing line for the bait to swim out you should not have excessive slack line.

Leaving slack line may be the issue..always keep the bait tight..loose line lying next to the bait will get bitten through
