Wot a day, where do i start.A few buddies and i (Mark,Bradford, his son Cody and myself Terry) decided to go fish at Spreeuwalle because we heard such alot about the place.Lo and behold not knowing wot is waiting instore for us. The day started out as follows: We went pumpin for prawn early morning because high tide was late afternoon,so we were well prepared with lotsa time to check out the gullies, sandbanks etc on the low when we got there. When we got to Spreeuwalle there were 2 guys that was just finished unpacking and about to go over the dunes to the water, wen Mark noticed that their Jeep's window was still open,we called them back and i started chatting to the owner of the Jeep(Douglas) askin if he knew the spot etc. It was their first time fishin Spreeuwalle aswell. After the chat we went our seperate ways and started our trek over the dunes too. When we got to the water and chose our spot Doug and his buddy was standing about 150mtrs away from where we were.Midday started out a bit quiet but i had a good feeling about the place because conditions looked good.About 3pm an old man arrived,u could notice he was 1 of the locals, lol, for the way he was prepped rod in hand (old school rod n reel by the way.ps.not that i'm judging him) with a little bait bucket and a small tool box as tackle box.Unlike us Kaapies that come to the water wit half of Tucker's supplies not forgetting the kitchen aswell.Lo and behold that this humble old man was gonna teach us a valuable lesson in life that will be cherished forever. In the meanwhile we were tryin different baits and spots while Oom rigged up and casted rite in front, not even long the old ballie was on,rod bending and strugglin wit that 'old' tackle to bring out that fish.Few minutes later Oom landed a monster of a Steenbras. That boosted our spirits too because now we knew that this spot that's new to us have potential.About 5min after Oom rebaited he was on AGAIN,this time that bugger of a fish was pullin the poor Oom from side to side.I still joked with Mark telling him i hope Oom's heart is strong enough to handle the adrenaline. After seeing Oom struggling i went closer to ask him if i could help he replied tiredly 'asseblief'. I went into the water up behind another monster of a steenbras splashin away,i managed to lift it out of the water. In that time Douglas also came closer to see Oom's catch again. While we standing at the edge of the water i'm on my knees, fish between my legs takin the hook out,Dougie next to me and Oom panting for his breath,i look up and lift the fish to show Mark Oom's catch, the old man falls over and goes into Cardiac Arrest.I went up behind Oom and pulled him away from the rising tide.I held his head between my legs and opened his mouth to keep his passageway open.Dougie was helping me and shoutin out instructions at wot to d
om was still breathing heavy. The next moment was chillin'.Oom's eyes rolled back and he stopped breathing,we checked for a pulse, there was none.Dougie started performing C.P.R. while i held Oom's head in position. That seconds tickin by felt like eternity.Dougie was hard at it pumpin Oom's chest and doin mouth to mouth,he was just brilliant at wot he was doin. The next moment Oom cough and he started breathing again.I could feel that with him comin back to life myself and Dougie had that feeling of relieve, rejoice and jubilation comin over us,wot a feeling. In that time 1 of the guys had phoned the paramedics, which came an hour later after we gave them gps co-ordinates.I think that was so disgusting knowing that we close to Mykonos,Langebaan, the Navy and the Army base. In the meantime i was talkin to Oom to keep him occupied,he knew it was Saturday and his name is Andries Smit,77yrs old from Langebaan.I checked if he had a cellphone to call his family he said no and he wouldn't let me call his wife otherwise he can't come fishin again. After the paramedics checked him out they gave him a clean Bill of Health. He insisted that he's ok and that we don't have to take him home and that he's ok to drive.Mark helped him with his tackle to his bakkie while the paramedics helped him over the dunes.Just before Oom left he thanked us,so i joked with him and asked if i could cast on his spot,Oom gave me a few pointers and guess wot.The next thing u know wot happened.Yeah u right,i got my Bielie of a Steenbras too.Dankie Oom Andries,i wish u good health. If any Sealiners in Langebaan knows the Oom please let me know how he's doin.My name's Terry,ph 082788four703.Thanx oom for teachin me a rich lesson in life, appreciate and respect life and u will be blessed.
