What to pair with a Bluefish special

Good day Sealiners,

Hope all is well. Firstly, apologies if this is a repost of many reposts, but the question I have is a 2 part.

I recently purchased an Assassin Bluefish Special 13ft spinning rod for which I have ABSOLUTELY no complains about.

However the reel I have paired with it is not living up to its expectations. For the sake of humour, it's a 4000 spinning reel (I'm not going to mention the brand name in fear of further humiliation)

BUT!....

I am looking at an upgrade. Most likely pairing it with a 6000 or 8000 sized spinning reel.

So my questions.

1. What size would be preferable 6000 or 8000. Please consider that I'm not average built, I'm quite slender and small, 1.7m tall to be exact, so my casting strength is not that awesome.

2. What brand of reel in this size would be compatible/suitable for the Bluefish Special. I'm really considering the PENN reels, namely the PENN Wrath or Penn Fierce.

I look forward to your responses (and possible banter:fbash)

Howsit JarvisWalker,

Definitely a beast of a rod that you have with you there. Maybe answer the following questions and the members on the forum would be able to point you in the right direction.

1. What type of fishing are you doing with the rod ?
2. what is your budget for the reel ?

Hi Zaahid

Thanks for your response, mostly edibles, Belman, Kob, Elf, Galjoen, Steenbras and so on. Doubt i'll be able to land a Kracker lol.

Budget of about R1500. My dream reel would be a PENN Battle or Slammer, but the way my bank account is setup I'll have to wait a bit for the Slammer.

Side note...

I've always fished with multiplier reels since the beginning of time. This is my first spinning setup. So I am a complete novice to these things

I got a Rovex Big Boss 6000 on my 14ft Bluefish. Happy with it. Check out Bilimoria online shop for great prices and service

Value for money? The Rovex Big Boss 6000.... Any 8000 is too heavy for a 13ft rod.

And jip, order online from Bilimoria, they are the best.

Thanks guys, I've heard some great stories about the Rovex reels. I'm a bit hesitant, still leaning towards the PENN brand, but I hear you on the 8000 size being too big

I fish with a second generation Big Boss 9000 on an Assassin Beachmaster Lite (12ft9 rated 2-4 oz), no issues with reel size so I would not say an 8000 is to big (had this setup since 2016). The reel sizes also differ between brands. Rule with the less expensive (actually all) grinders are just don't go swimming with them, seems a certain death sentence unless you properly service the entire reel afterwards.
