Hi guys,

Having a hard time selecting a rod . Will use the setup fishing with bait occasionally maybe for trolling.

Penn Fathom 40 lever drag 2 speed to be spooled with 35lb mono (Maxima Ultra Green )

Looking for a 7ft to 6ft6 15kg+ rod. Max R1500.

shimano tervella sal werk
20-50lb setup, kom in 6,6

target specie will also depend on what rod you will end up with.

tuna shorter rods apply.
all other gamefish...longer and sometimes softer rods will apply.

when trolling live bait, longer rods could be better in keeping the line apart.

the kingfisher range was/ is nice.
could get 2x for R1500

Dankie Willem. Jy verwys na die Trevala ML . Ek het een met n Fathom 25NLD op met 20lb lyn.

Ek kyk na iets met bietjie Meer backbone. Die Trevala XXH sal werk , maar kos R 2500.

Not sure if they are still around....Penn Legion Rods, for R 1500, you might be able to buy x 2 as well... I was told some years ago (2014) - that Shimano / Daiwa / Penn - all different names for each rod vs lbs, uses the same blanks, funny enough at that time I bought about 14 + Deep Sea rods, various catergories (eyes / rollers / rod lbs etc etc blah blah blah)... I had a look, and "true's bob" the blanks are very very alike, if not the same, even some rollers / eyes same same - just a matter of a different label, and different fish emblem/logo here and there.

Where did you buy 40LD? Back then 2010 - 2012 abouts, I had to import the 40LD + 30LD from the US... however I think the Dollar vs ZAR = 7 bucks, so it was peanuts importing stuff. I could only get hold of the 50 + 60LD in SA... I also battled with the Penn Fierce 7000, also had import them back then, again... money for jam, regarding Forex at the time. I had a deal going with the one shop in Florida USA, as I bought loads of Penn Stuff Senators / Squalls / Fierce / Braid etc... he took "good" care of me, with my SARS import battles. Sadly now days, not so cool to import stuff from the US anymore.

Also have a look at the KingFisher + Elbe Range, very good budget rods, R 1500 more than enough to sort you out!

What are you going to target?

That's a bigger reel than my tuna reel :) Reel probably at home on a long shark stick from the surf or on a 50lb standup rod offshore for cape tuna with 80lb braid backing and some good .65mm topshot. But what do I know haha..

For bottoms and light trolling I just use a jigging stick chopped short on the butt and upside down with a saltist 40H on and .55 or .60 line... Works like a charm, have an elbe and shimano speedmaster that I use for than, much over muchness as far as blanks are concerned..wish I could find another of those elbe jiggers. That setup slayed big fish on lockdown bottom fishing and caught bunch of small tuna on troll too..

If you are going to be baiting for tuna and not using for bottoms, where? I was told to just get a 30/50lb standup rod, any would do, for cape fish for my 30w. For smaller fish in Southern cape you could go lighter on rod. I don't use more than 7kg drag anyway on big fish in the cape on standup, the water is deep and they can swim and tire themselves out. My biggest tuna was around 90kg and was landed in 30 mins on 7kg drag and 30w and 30/50lb standup rod (first big one was much smaller and took 2 hours of torture, helps to know what you are doing), more drag than that and I don't want to go swimming in the deep blue with a big tuna harnessed to me, again. I watch my skipper and crew are relatively effortlessly slaying the fish heavier than them and they are in their mid 60's, fighting large fish in deepwater is all in the technique and does not require brute force at all. For our inshore species up east coast we fish much heavier drag on lighter gear?! But water is shallow and fish are angry and want to cut you off..
