Tutorial: How to make your own trolling lures

Glued to the tube. I did make it narrower than my standard PU insert so it will go in there too.

On Friday ahead of the weekends fishing, I felt that I didn't have a nice china lure. We were going to do some light tackle fishing and I like to make sure we get literally anything to prevent the kids from getting bored. I needed one more lure in my arsenal so I designed this little guy.

The idea was to make a lure with a small slened profile but with a bit of weight so it doesnt get blown around to easily.

It weighs 23 grams (head only).
The head is 17mm diameter X 20mm long
Overall length is 140mm

The head has a lead insert.

Another pic.

I literally finished it Friday night and swam it on Saturday.

Note the bite marks on the head

We also lost this lure. On it's first outing it got hammered. The fish ran and pealed 150m of string with no stopping at all before the line parted... dammit.

I might have the strike on video, I hope so any way. Need to cheek the footage.

This is the 10" marble plunger on it's first outing.

Unfortunately it got lost due to the line parting.

The first half of the video is in very clear open ocean so you can see it's action and bubble trail. The lure swims incredibly well. The second part shows it being it being harassed and eventually taken by a Tuna.

This is also a nice idea. Same insert but I painted the insert with resin and covered it in glitter. Once dry I coated it with resin again before adding the eyes. The eyes are moulded in moulds I made.

Great tutorial Bennie . How about a side bar tutorial on how to make those amazing eyes??

Hi Bennie,

Apart from being the most interesting guy on the forum you are also supremely talented. I am a rock and surf angler by nature but have spent hours following your tutorials on the net. Such dedication to ones passion is not an everyday occurance. Thank you for the time you take to share your knowledge with us all.

Hi,
Your recognition is appreciated. Thank you!

I'll keep it coming... ::S

Eyes... I use 2 methods. The first is very simple to do and really just consists of vinyl cut outs. You could try cut these out with a jig and a pair of scissors but the best way is to just ask any sign writer to cut some circles for you. Wont charge you much and if you dont come right, I'll gladly help you.

These are the most common eyes used...
