I would like to use my neighbours Jack Russel for shark bait!
:hyst:
Enigma.......did you do the wrappings yourself by hand?
They look very neat for a "hand job"

If you have a 3 piece rod how do you find the spine of each piece? The thick piece will not bend to indicate the spine?

Hi

The commercial builds and longer wraps are done using a Pac-Bay wrapping machine

Projects are all done by hand (not hand job though)

Finding the spine on a 3 piece is very difficult and I doubt that is has a spine on the 3rd (ase section) as this is more a parallel shaft than a conical shaft and as you say almost impossible to bend.

Being that the action of the rod is parabolic where all the little bends add up to create the full curve of the rod.

What I have done with the lighter rods is to first fins the
spine of the tip then mark the spine with chalk.

I then see if I can get an indication of the spine of the mid section on it's own.

I then insert the tip and follow the process again When I get the jump in the roll I note where it differs to the marked spine of the tip and then make the necessary adjustment by rotating the tip in the mid-section till I get the jump aligned with the spine in the tip.

With the heavy 6-8oz rods there's just no way that I've ever got to find a definite spine in the base but with some of the 2-4 and some 4-6 (T24) I could find a spine.

For years I did my own rods entirely by hand, then made a wrapper/dryer which works very well for the one or two rods a year I do.

It is very satisfying to catch fish on tackle you make yourself.
Quite a few of my rods consist of bits and pieces of older broken rods I've fixed and most seem to last & work well.
