Throw Baits - Scratching and Gully Trace

The STD Gully Trace is a very versatile trace used to catch various small beach and reef species. Common trace used for scratching with small baits such as redbait, marine worms, white mussel, prawns, fish baits...

A small float can be added onto the hook snood or directly onto the hook shaft to add a little lift and movement to the bait presentation for certain species.

Some guys put the hook snood on the other eye of the swivel.
They told me it has a more direct feel on the bites.

Anybody tried it that way?

@upcoming star I also do it the same way as trophy and have never had a probem feeling bites...

US, I also do it the way you suggested, the reason I do it like that is when you fish with small swivels, you can eliminate the chances that you can lose a fish due to the swivel popping.
@Trophy, I know a couple of guys who believe this trace is one of the best for Cracker, just shorten the hook and sinker snoots to 15-20cm and change the hook to a 7/0 or 8/0 and there you go. I actually caught a cracker on a trace like this, while fishing for Gallies with a 2/0 hook.

Been watching the local Cracker chaps in action and will soon be posting a third Cracker rig...

Is that nylon rope at the sinker? Which knot do you tie between your mono onto that nylon rope @ the sinker?

The piece of rope is there to stop your sinker line from bashing against the rocks and breaking off while you retrieving your line.

Just use an earbud at the sinker to protect your line.

Snip the ends of the earbud off...you are now left with a hollow tube...push your sinker line through and tie...you line going through the hole in the sinker is now protected by the plastic tube...wont snap off in the cast or cut against the rocks.

Hi, I see a lot of guys using a small red float with this rig, just above the hook. is this necessary? will it work better? I want to scratch for big blacktails….

Not necessary but helps give movement to the bait in the water, attracting fish.
Just take a few small floats in the tacklebag and try both with and without the floats. Some days the fish may prefer one or the other, some days neither, some days both.
