Strobe Light for Night Kite Fishing

KiteFisher has made me quite keen on this night fishing with a kite,  so yesterday i went to High Tide tackle in Warners and found they had some for deep sea fishing. This one lasts for 300 hrs +- and is activated by keeping two electrodes on top wet, when they are dry it switches off, and should last a couple of years. One would  then be able to mark your kite and have one above your rig. This is what i have made for the kite line, it flashes Red and i have  a blue flashing one you slide onto the mainline. Cost R60 each.

Kite flyer ,help us out here,do you intend tying the strobe onto your terminal rig i.e close to your hooks, so that when it possibly become airborne you can spot it.The reason why I am asking is because the wet -switch will probably only function for a couple of minutes once lifted/taken out of the water.

Or else. I presume it has several switch-modes,with which you can manually swith it to strobe.?

I was thinking of leaving it about 3m +- above the float so if suddenly disappears or  starts moving up or down more than normal, could also help with setting the depth of your bait. It would also help you to determine if your bait is behind the back line.

To keep the electrodes wet i think glueing a small ball of cotten wool on top and wetting it would do the trick or hold it place with an elastic band. I must say this strobe is quite bright its like a disco light going off.

Do you  think by also putting a smaller one closer to the bait would help attact that big boy? I have read some where, flashing blue works best in deep water and green in shallower water.

I have never done this before, i am waiting for those offshores! But any advice would be appreciated.

I have been toying with the idea ever since you posted the strobe,Dont know much about that discipline(or rather, know nothing),but it sure wont scare them nunu's away, would it?

If you are using the roller troller(pulley-rigged),everything safely behind backline, and you retrieve, maybe 20 meters or so,of kite line rapidly, wont it wet the switch again, and maybe, 'move" your bait a bit which cant do much harm.It is difficult to explain but ,my mind says if you retrieved a bit of kite line whilst your fishing-rod(fishing 2/rod-system) is pulley rigged, shouldn't you be able to generate slack on your "drop",enough possibly to get your strobe's wet-switch wet .(I see we have some experimenting to do,ha ha)

Think about it,I am finding it difficult to visualise right now,lol still early in the day.

I thought of this idea to attach a strobe or anything else for that matter onto your main trace for fishing at night. You need what i call Scoobi doo wire, Coated Steel Wire Trace, some Shrink Tubing, A Strobe, and a Lighter. This simple set up will act as a stopper for the Strobe.

Wrap the Scoobi doo wire neatly around Wire Trace and tighten by twisting the ends the opposite way.

Slip the shrink tubing onto Scoobi Wire and use the lighter to shrink it around the Scoobi Doo, burn it to just get a bubble in the Shrink Wrap, use your fingers to mould in place. You can burn it less so that it will move up and down.

Slip the Strobe Light On and Finnish your trace.

Kite Flyer, cool idea.Just a silly question (shows you how little I know about electicity), Can the strobe be activated by means of perhaps a wire(in other words using it dry,say as a marker ) and if it can be activated other than being wet/submerged,how will this affect the lifespan of it,(if at all).

As you can tell I am thinking of using it as a marker ,where it will hang high and dry in the air.

i know this is an old thread

but i have had this solution all off my last kite-fishing

season and it worked just perfect

i hang 1 of these 5 mtr under the kite on the kiteline

and a second one 10 mtr above the release-clip on the droperline

i took some floating soft foam and cut i ring out off it

the foam ring is sitting stretched over the base off this

flasher where the 2 activating electrodes are glued

then when the foam ring is wet (soaked n water or even spit inside ) it activates the flasher

I use cycle LED lights

Buy them at the China mall for under R20, water resistant silicone covering. Blue, red or white.

Visible 900m over water. Solid light, fast strobe or intermittent strobe.

Replaceable battery not even an option because it's cheaper to buy a new one.

The other light I have is a Deep drop strobe light for Squid fishing, takes a single D battery (same Duracel in it for 3 years now)

Twist it to switch on and twist to switch off. Waterproof to 300m.
