is dropshotting viable in the sea at cape town and if it is what would be recommended startup kit (rod reel combo). the budget is about R2000 but flexable depending

If you've got other R&S kit, I wouldn't bother with anything too expensive as the Cape Town area isn't great for dropshot. If you don't have any other kit it may be worth purchasing something you can use for Galjoen etc. A good quality, cost effective setup would probably cost in the region of R800. A Shimano Slade 2500 - 4000, a Shimano Bass rod with a cast range of 1/8 to 3/4 ounce and 125m 10lb Fireline. to upgrade to a reel with corrosion resistant bearings with probably cost another R400 - R600. Good luck.

I also use a slade reel and haven't had any problems. I use a shimano scimitar rod. Extremely good value for money. As Dingleberry said, only put about 100/130 metres fireline on. Its a waste if you put it on your whole spool as you will hardly ever use all of it. I have just put a cheap nylon as backing.
