Some days it's just like that, you know you want to go out fishing but you have a clue what to do.
Buoyweather says "don't fish" small craft advisory and water temp sucks, but I phone my friend Julio Tremosso (fellow sealiner) telling him, don't know what but I'm going are you available?

Saturday morning I ask for my boat to be placed in the water at the boat club, but don't know what I'm going to do Sunday.
Go to the club to check if everything is ok with my boat

Noticed some other boats already on the water.
Phone Rafael Araujo the owner of a beautiful 2oceans magnum 25 and asked him, what are you going to do? Do you know something I don't?
He says have heard the Giant African Threadfin have appeared at the Kwanza.
Ok, Now I have a plan, don't know if it's going to work but at least I know what tackle to prepare.

I thought I could put in practice all the threadfin advices I had told bux (sorry Bux not yet)

The trip it's a bit long, almost 130 miles round trip but what the heck.

Rafael partner hadn't arrived, I went with Tre ahead and we would meet up further along the way, that allowed me to stop in some coral areas an try some winter jigging.

First place two drifts two drops, Tre had some squid jigs he got from Bennie Jordan and I told him used them I've got a good feeling about them and bottom species.

Here he is on his first drop with a pinkish squid jig (sorry Bennie our favorite color around here is pink not Durban golden :) )

Small Corvina (Tre first ever)

I looked at the Fish Finder and told him, there are some Amberjack above the spot try it if you don't get hit on the bottom.

Finally Rafael came by and we went on to Kwanza river our initial plan, here is his beautiful 2oceans magnum 25ft, in my opinion the best 25ft boat in Angola nowadays, he bought it pre-owned, restored it, new wiring and electronics, installed two Zukes 200Hp on that boat, and it now runs at 44 Knots

Look at how this cat runs!!!

We arrived at the Kwanza crossed the waves break and trolled around for Giant African Threadfin or Cubera Snapper, I managed to take some pictures of the place

Not a single bite, I saw some fisherman near shore and asked them how fishing was going, they told me "small, small fish".

Some days are like that, things don't go according to plan, after a couple hours trolling around I told Rafael let's leave either the tide is not the proper one or the Threadfin haven't arrived yet in numbers.

On the way out we saw the "famous" Angolan Dawn boat (Also without any fish strike whatsoever :) )

We came back home Rafael went trolling for Cubera Snapper middle of the way and I told Tre we should explore jigging a couple of my bottom fishing points to try save the day I was in no mood of getting back to the club after all those miles and with only two smaller fish.

On one of the points I told Tre I was sure the Fish Finder was telling me there was fish there.

My line got stuck in the bottom but Tre got something at 110 meter depth.

After What seemed like an eternity, and me yelling at Tre don't allow him to breath, pressure him, we finally saw what was on the end of the line.

Tre was tired but he still managed to take a "proper" picture with the Biggest Wreckfish I've seen in Luanda on the last couple of years.

Our fishing day "honor" was saved!!! Tre had done it, a 20Kg Wreckfish on one of Bennies squid jigs and on top of that his first Wreckfish ever!!!!

We could now go back to the club not afraid of any kind of comparison with the other guys :)

oooouuuuuuuuiieeeeeee!!

Safari Men: Fernando and Julio! Excellent stuff. Shows once again the enormous versatility of you master anglers and the prolific waters we are so privileged to call home turff.

I half imagine what happened at the club when you chaps landed in Luanda!

Perfect stuff! Well done, both of you!

Thanks again Fernando for another memorable day. You and Jan make my photo album a lot more interesting, no doubt! You only forgot to tell how you put that boat on a 45º angle eheheheh.

Let me just say those squid jigs where bought in Durban from Gladiator Lures. I did speak with Bennie and Mike about our need for heavier ones (300gr and 350gr) and we confirmed yesterday they are a must have on our tackle box.

We were congratulated by everyone as (it seemed to me) you don´t get this kind of prize everyday. When you look at it, I was just the foot-soldier, Fernando was the General... I only needed to send the jig and bring it up again; he had to put the boat on the right place of that enormous ocean, see the drift, look at the fishfinder and put this all together so that the jig became irresisteable to that big, fat, absolutly-lovely-to-eat fish.

I lost my iphone and glasses, have a cold, my right thigh is killing me with pain BUT all is well after yet another record for me.

No, there is no specific restriction on Wreckfish in Angola.

It's been some time I don't see this size of fish in Luanda area but I regularly see smaller ones.

Outside Luanda I see monsters bigger than this one on a regular basis but I'm probably the only person fishing there at this depths.

I found very strange the way Tre rigs these jigs.

The leader goes on this swivel that is placed on what I would call "the bottom" of the jig and connected to the assist hook.

It's is fished "upside down", those plastic things "fall" over the lead head as does the assist.....

You are talking about the surf work leaving the kwanza river mouth, the guys behind us sayd it was almost 90º angle :)

I must stop looking at South African boats surf launches pics, it's affecting my skipping judgments and has made you get wet and loose your sunglasses :)

I think it might have been something like this but with a center console open mono boat.

Yip, that jig is made by Gladiator lures! I got some in stock..

This is my own... 300 grams. I do need to do another pour though!

Those jigs really do work, I think it has to do with the movement of the mop.
