Hi guys
A good mate of mine is going to sodwana bay next week and would like to try his hand at spear fishing.
Where can one get a chart of the rules and regulations for that area? and species limitations?

He's a master diver, but has never done spear fishing, so this will be his first time.

thanks in advance

First of all you need a license/permit to spearfish.

All you need to know regarding the law for recreational angling is in below link. You can also clear up any questions you have at the parks board office at Sodwana.

Divers have been killed by sharks here.

Get somebody experienced to dive with, master diver means nothing when you have never spearfished before Different ballgame. Having said that, he will know the golden rule that applies to any form of diving. Dive alone, die alone.

Great sport to practice but start of slow and with some experienced spear fisherman.

Good luck, shoot straight!

Fairly simple as rules go:
  • Have valid spearfishing license[/*]
  • Don't dive 1/4 mile reef or 2 mile reef[/*]
  • Only shoot pelagics - (Kaakap no longer allowed to be shot)[/*]
  • Watch out for boats if diving close to the launch site[/*]
Sodwana is best dived off a boat.

Organise a spearfishing charter with Maginty's or Jannie.Local knowledge is always best.
