So my beloved Fortuna was stolen and the bastards

So my beloved Fortuna was stolen and the bastards got rid of the tracking system within minutes. My insurance payout is due shortly and Im yet to decide what I will be replacing the 'Tuna with.  It gave me nothing but joy over the last 18 months but naturally I am also looking at other options.  Based on my needs Ive  nailed it down to either getting another Tuna or getting the Ranger 3.2 D/c 4x4 6M . I dont really ever tow anything and my 4x4 trips are usually to the dunes in Namibia and recently Sani Pass .

So to start with the old cliche that I dont want to start another thread that turns into brand bashing  and would prefer people with 1st hand experience of the Ranger to comment.

Reading through the various reviews and forums on the net it seems that there is a perceived problem with its engine, gearbox and lots of turbo problems . I understand that launching any product from scratch will have teething problems but it is worrying when every second post on a thread is about the same thing , mainly the turbos blowing. In some cases it becomes almost comical following the thread over a period of weeks where the vehicle goes back to Ford and blows the turbo again within 500 km . A few members are even on their 3rd engines in under 60k Km.  A recent software update as apparently addressed some of the problems.

With the above in mind

- I accept that people will only post when they have a problem , therefore difficult to get a perception of the failures as a % of vehicles on the road . The Ranger has also been selling very well .

Sealiners please feel free to comment about your experiences with the vehicle and pref only about the 3.2 as it is a 5 pot vs the 2.2 4 pot and hence wont suffer form the same engine problems.  If any one can recommend a reputable Ford Dealer in the JHB area that would also be great as it seems there are just as many complaints  about Ford dealers giving shoddy service.

Please feel free to PM me if you dont want to post on the thread :SSS

Cheers Ant

Don't own one so cannot comment.
I have however done a lot of reading on the T6 Ranger and found this website to offer helpful insight (not sure if you have already read the various threads on here):

Ja sounds like it. The turbo problems on the 3.2 have been on-going for months now so I suppose FSA couldn't ignore it any longer. Great looking vehicle with even more impressive specs ..... but the common issues are a worry (blown motors, turbos, gearboxes, cracking load bins being the frequent problems). But as I say, one helluva good looking bakkie with specs rivalling luxury SUV's!

regarding the dealer....speak to Johan Prinsloo at Ford Fury Midrand. He is also in charge of the 4xFury Adventure Club for them.

Oh yes, forgot to mention this .... many happy customers it seems. Even when okes were fighting with FSA, they only had compliments for this particular dealership.

Thanks guys , will speak to Johan. I love the looks and specs , if it wasnt for these not so minor issues my order would of been placed already .

He is a personal friend and has always been known for his customer service.

hi

i have the fortuner and the 3.2 ranger 4x4.
just blew my engine on 25,000 km on the ranger. im not the only one. have had 5 people in my town having the same problem. its my own personal vehicle, not given to anyone to drive and i never hammer it.
all in all, great bakkie, loads of power. but will never buy one again.
im in a legal battle with ford at the moment, they want to replace the engine and i want a new bakkie.
i didnt pay 400k for a vehicle to be returned to me after it been 6 months old and now with a new engine , lying stripped in a workshop with an appy working on it.

highly regret not sticking to toyota and isuzu which is what i always owned.

but on a lighter note....some guys have done almost a 100 000km on their rangers and still no problems

Did the water hose go causing the problem and engine failure?

You say you don't really tow anything,so why do you want to buy the 3.2?Why not buy the 2.2,you still have more than enough power, none of the engine problems and it's a lot more fuel efficient.Yes it's not as fancy as the XLT but do you really need all the bells and whistles, not worth the extra money if you ask me.

I decided on the 2.2 after many nights research,I should get my bakkie by Friday.Ordered the 2.2 with all the extras that I want and I still paid a lot less.

Hi Sharky

My pref is to get another SUV as I have a Corsa Bakkie that fills in when needed to load stuff etc . I was prepared to change to a Ranger D/C simply because I was really impressed by the Specs and the extra power of the 3.2 , its had loads of good short term reviews. I think its by far the best looking of all the "bakkies" at the moment.  I spoke to someone at gym last night that also decided to call it quits on his 3.2 as the turbo was giving him non-stop hassle.

Hope you  enjoy your new car Sharky :SSS

At this stage it looks like Im going to get another Fortuna , @ R500k the 3.2 is just to big a chunk of change to spend on something that is suffering a lot of catastrophic engine failures. Ive also owned the Isuzu KB280DT and that thing was tough as nails , never gave me a days trouble over 270k km.

I really really wanted to convince myself to get the Ranger, maybe next time if their reliability record improves on the 3.2

Amarok?

I test drove both the Ranger and Amarok. Despite the specs, the Amarok feels a lot more sprightly (prob. cause it weighs a bit less). The interior is also in a different league to Ranger, really top notch. Long term reviews seem to be very positive as well!

Things that come in 2L - Milk , Juice and Amarok ::S

If I was set on a D/C would definitely consider it , but at this stage would still prefer another SUV . Despite it not being the most modern 4x4 , I really enjoyed my 18 months with the Fortuna.

If I go back to a D/C in the mid term it would be a Ranger? or Amarok or the next Hilux in 2025 :SSS
