Old Lures

Hi Guys

what do you do with your old lures and in saying that i mean Rapala and Rattler lures. The newer types where the colour is like a foil on the outside. I have a couple that have peeled to non recognisable and dont really want to throw them away. So after some inspiration from here decided to handpaint them again. Just wondering what the rest of you do with them. Or maybe im missing something here.

When we where still using the wooden rapalas with the steel lips, we use to patch them using nail cutex. This was to seal them again and protect the wood.

Not sure how good the cutex will stick to the newer plastic lure, but worth a try.

You may find that a beat up often chowed lure may produce more fish than a new untouched one.

My bastard sardine rapala I found washed up full of water with no hooks and paint, at gamtoos.. Did some magic marker and silver spraycan home paintjob that is still on it years later..That thing is so full of teethmarks by now and it still catches. Took it overseas, the wahoo just wanted to kill it, in the end we were using 8/0 trebles on this little thing as hooks were being bent straight over and over, it had no action but still the fish want it dead. Still got some fish in the freezer from it recently.. Some lures catch fish and some don't, who knows. Those that catch fish don't need eyes or shiny paint.

I do agree also had a magic One that just kept on producing and producing. But some of mine when fished together with exactly the same new one just stopped producing after the foil started peeling. Checked the action in the water and it was still running great 6 strikes on the new one. none on the old one. It would not have been a worry if I did not see this for myself. Same rod same reel same leader same line 3M apart one on left and one on right. Even tried to get them the same distance out New one got all the strikes.
Maybe it was just the flavour of the day. and the one without the foil had a contrast the fish did not like. Well the mysteries of fishing. Thanks for your input I will try to not go to wild on colours as I know sometimes less is more when it comes to lures.

If they still in good nick to be re-used I'd re-paint them.....for one its gr8 to play around with yr own combo of colors & patterns......Then finish off the product with a good quality resin dip....its not "teeth-proof"....but protects the lure somewhat & helps a bit with the shine.
