Melkbosstrand Slipway banned to Kayak drop-offs

Yesterday I was accosted by the S.A.P. who brought to my attention that only sea-going craft with trailers were allowed to use the slipway and that I was contravening the rules display at the slipway (pity they don't enforce boats going out at wake speed only and jet ski's racing up and down the beach area).

Given that there are usually no more that 6 kayaks/ski's in the water at any given time and that in only takes less than 2 minutes to off-load one's kayak on the un-congested slipway, I feel this is discriminatory against the kayaking fraternity who surely also have the right to use the slipway for their sea going craft.

If other forum feel the same way I would like to petition the "authorities" to change this rule and not make me a criminal (plus a hefty fine) just for doing some recreational fishing/sport

This was the point I raised with the S.A.P. Officer,we finally agreed that I could reverse down the slipway provided my tyres were still on the concrete (not the hard-packed sand) and then unload the kayak. So this is what I will be doing from now on (and contributing to congestion on the slipway) As George Bernard Shaw remarked " The Law is an Ass" Paul

Was it SAPS or Law Enforcement? Did they give you a court date? I would fight this in court if I were you. If it was SAPS I would talk to the station commander.

Geez .... only a few extra metres to carry 'ere kayak. Authorities only trying to control safety of craft at sea. Rather support than criticise.

Thanks for the tip, I decided to re-check this morning (It was Law Enforcement not S.A.P.) and read the rules displayed on the board. I could find no reference to craft on trailers only, being allowed to launch and also took the matter up with a different L.A. officer who was on duty.

He was in agreement that I could off-load the kayak and it would appear the previous officer was being over-zealost in his own application and interpretation of the by-law.

So it's back to status-quo at Melkbos, we can off-load our kayaks and ski's.

Would normally agree, however in this case (see my later posting) this was an instance  of one "Authority"   interpretating and applying his own rules and not the one's displayed at the slip,which ultimately does allow (the very few kayakers) to safely off-load there craft closer to the waters edge.

Yet the same sorry excuse for law enforcement officrs cannot enforce the no-wake zone because they can't swim out to stop the occasional reprobates on jetskis.

I was born in Blouberg ~ before there was a Blue Peter Hotel. The slip at Blouberg was municipal, so I assume the slip at Melkbos is also Municipal?

No one can ban anyone from a Municipal Slipway.

Go check the mayor and take him for a paddle or klap him with one!!
