Why don't you try white mussel. It just might be a better bait for the steenies in BHB.:fishn
i use them from time to time but i dont have a license. they work well mostly for kob. iv seen a guy fishing with sand prawn and he caught 11 steenbras in under a hour at BHB.

When hunting for Steenbra, I will start off with plain pilchard inside out. Steenbra are especially fond of the soft, yet firm back meat of the pilchard.

Make sure to remove the bone structure of the fish and then use the thicker back meat as bait.

Once I have allocated them, I will then start using different baits such as, chokka, octopus, crayfish (when available) and white mussel. You will quickly see what is there food of the day as some will just get a few bumps while other gets the take directly.

A very good combination is, a piece of pilchard back combined with either cray or mussel.

lots of useful information simen.
thanks alot.
howcome your stenbras look fatter than the ones i see in port elizabeth.

If I may explain it this way, the Namibian coast Steenbra is shorter but more round and fat as to the Cape west coast one.

Some one somewhere explained it the scientific way, will see if I can find that post.

I haven't really been fishing for steenbras since, but it's about time I go looking for that steamer again!
