I've been absent for a long While on the site , and miss the idle banter of the guys on here .

On a More Serious note , for a change , besides being beaten On robberg , and some Epic , trips to Mazeppa , i've also managed to stumble across a Few new things , one of which i simply cannot Ignore , and simply have to post a pic and tell you guys about .

I've had some pretty decent shades in my life : during my Mossgass Days , i went big , and bought myself 2 pairs of the original Mission IMpossible sunnies .They were Expensive , well made , solid , expensive , Glass lens JObs. I Loved them . They weren't suited to fishing , and once the rubbers Let go , I had to be satisfied with the Fact that i would need to retire them .

I continued to support Oakley for a long time : Their lenses were then made from " Polycarbonate " .

Seems i'd fallen victim to the Advertizing Trap , and forgot just how good Glass Lenses , can actually be ...

Enter then , THese :

I dont usually Punt Things like This , but when the product is simply SO good that it cannot be ignored , I feel the need to share .

Well , they've been around for Almost 30 years , and - well , let me copy paste from the site . The important , formal goodies First :

Mako's Italian and Japanese lenses are the clearest available anywhere in the world. These de-centred lenses have been sourced to ensure they offer 99.9% glare free vision and provide true depth perception, crucial for any outdoor activity. We have carefully collected some of the best lens colour combinations ever developed so that no matter what your passion, we have a lens that will allow you to see more and do more in any environment.

All our lenses adhere to the AS/NZS 1067:2003 standard and are thoroughly tested by a team of passionate outdoors people from fishermen to skippers, to charter operators. In fact some of our lenses are used exclusively by people whose livelihoods depend on their vision. Commercial line fishermen, race car drivers and outdoor journalists have all had a hand in developing the absolute best polarised lenses Mako can provide.

FAQs

Glass or Polycarbonate lenses?

Glass lenses have much higher clarity and scratch resistance than plastic based lens materials such as polycarbonate. Polycarbonate lenses are lightweight, impact resistant and cost less.

Does thinner glass lenses mean clearer vision?

No. Thinner glass has little to do with clarity but rather the focus should be on the quality of the glass used. Thinner glass lenses can break more easily depending on sunglass design. Mako glass lenses range from 1.8mm to 2.1mm in thickness depending on the individual frame design. Mako glass polarised lenses are made using high grade crown glass to ensure optimum clarity.

What is a decentred lens?

Decentred lenses have been used for decades. They were developed by still and video camera lens manufacturers in the 80s. All high curve / wrap around sunglasses should use decentred lenses to move the optical centre of the lens in front of your eye where you need it. This reduces distortions in the periphery to below the limits of the eye. A high wrap lens that is not decentred, would give you a seasickness type effect.

What is an AR coating?

Anti-reflective (AR) coating was developed before WW2 and stops reflections occurring on the inside face of the lens giving you better vision. We use 12 layers of AR on our glass lenses (approx 30% higher than industry standards) as well as oleophobic and hydrophobic coatings.

What is an oleophobic coating?

Oleophobic treatments or coatings are added on the lens surfaces to repel oil, dust, water, and dirt. This makes you sunglasses easier to clean and makes the lens less susceptible to scratching. It's similar to some mobile phone coatings available today.

What is a hydrophbic coating?

Hydrophobic coatings on the outer layer of the lens ensure water beads up and runs off the lens in a way similar to the way rain will run off a windsreen that has been treated with Rain X.

Why do polarised lenses come in different colours?

Polarising filters are always combined with tinted lenses and will reduce glare and ambient light. Grey lenses for example cut down the most ambient light. Copper on the other hand appear brighter by cutting down the most blue and green light. This in effect makes what you're seeing brighter so you can see more while still reducing glare.

When using polarised eyewear in any conditions or activity, it is crucial you have the correct lens for the job. Each lens colour combination will offer distinct advantages and disadvantages depending on the conditions and what you are trying to see.

Ok . but , basically put - i recently had prvilige to purchase a pair of Covert Sunglasses , the Very Latest model in their range .
This particular one happened to suit my very flat and large face , and Has a G2 H5 lens , High Definition Image Lens with a rose tint and green Mirror finish .

To be brutally blunt : the Sh%t works . I'd quite forgotten how good glass lenses are , and in truth , i Should Never have wandered away from them after the Xmetals . The problem , as With any Luxury , is the price of things , and though these glasses are Retailing cheap - at R 2600 , which includes case , strap , and a cloth , Let it be said that NOTHING can compare to owning a decent pair of sunglasses . Also , being highly Scratch resistent has also lured me back Away from cheap n cheerful Plastic Lenses: i don't car e how good the stand looks that you picking them off of - Cheap is never good for ones eyes .
Until you Experience a Decent pair of sunglasses , you simply will not understand the value of spending This kind of Money on eyewear .

Hopefully this Should help you understand why .

Splasher , i see that they range anything from R2200 for certainmodels , to R 2600 for these ones .

I'd wanted to go for costa's , but If i told you that i've flogged almost 10 sets of these singlasses , quite Casually , simply by making people put My Pair On and walking outside - I Would't be lying .

The HD imagery through them is quite simply amazing , and they offer an unreal visual experience.
i don't work for Mako at all .
It's just Really nice when you come Across a product , that is SO good , that it sells itself , and that is precisely what these glasses do .

i Notice they speak about this sort of Lens being introduced in the Early 80's , so what a Nice thought to know that some things are so good that the tech has been around for so long .

There's a ladies pair which i am focussed on getting now as Well , as the HD standard on them , as Well as the rose tint , which works extremely well at the coast , makes for a brilliant pair of sunglasses .

Every single person I have shown them to has been blown away , and the fact that The Green Mirror finish is not found on either the inside or the outside of the lens , but in fact INSIDE , between two panes of glass -makes for an exceptionally scratch Resistent pair of sunnies . I am a little rough around the edges , I tend to be hard on my eyewear , and to be honest , although i Know a lot of people are punting the R350 -to R399 eyewear , once you try something as good as this on ( even costa's , for that matter ) , there Trully can be NO comparison .

Most people will revert to saying " for that price i can buy 6 pairs of my crappy jobs and they do the same job !" .

Well- I beg to differ . And i have gone that route as well .
The image quality is simply unbelievable .
But don't take my word for it : at R26 00 they aren't cheap at all , and i've managed to outsell most of the stockists , simply by showing clients just how well they work . walking from inside in a shaded area , to outside into bright light , you cannot believe how sharp the image is .

You' notice I've not mentioned anywehre that these shades are the BEST shades in the world , and Have no equal , etc etc .All I'm trying to tell anyone reading This , is that they are worth every , single , penny ..

Trully worthy of their reputation as being some of the finest eyewear in the world .

Love em !
