Im looking to start fishing in the lagoons and riviers running through the EC i.e. Kariga, Bushmans, Sundaysriver. Will fish from the banks, aswell as the boat

Not looking to spend a fortune on equipment.

Any suggestions on a specific rod and reel along with the sizes? R400 - R500 per item.

Thanks

I got the Shimano Nexave 7ft Tiger rod with Sienna 4000 and Sufix 0.18mm braid.

Now its just about getting the line wet.

yea that does sound like a winning combination. Just couldn't justify getting the symetre for a grand.

the 15lb braid sounds leke though. I was advised to get 23lb braid which i thought was over-kill, but i guess now I can just reel them till they skid on the water ;)

Using a slightly heavier braid than your leader is pretty good idea as when you snag and break your line, it should break at lure knot. Which means less knots to retie, especially the braid/leader knot, and especially when the wind is blowing.
Braid is so thin these days that a couple of extra kgs makes no difference really.
Make sure you use a decent braid leader knot though.

Wat dink julle ouens van die volgende? 7ft Daiwa Crossfire stokkie met n Daiwa Regal 2000xi / Daiwa Laguna 2000 en 10lb Maxima braid?

I bought an Elbe Blue Crystal 6' rod and Sienna 2500 with 10lb Gatorbraid about 2 years back for around R1200 and I love the set-up. Caught loads of grunts, kobbies, shad, garrick and a couple of steenies with this set-up in the lagoons and it's just an awesome light set-up.

Ek het gekyk na die Crossfire en die Nexave een in elke hand en die Crossfire is baie ligter, ekt net gedink met die 4000 sal hy ongemaklik voel vir my, maar met n 2000 dink ek sal hy perfek wees.

Ek het gister toe see toe gegaan. Een ding het my verskriklik gepla though...

Is hierdie actually n probleem? Moet ek n ligter een gebruik? Kan die stok regtig breuk van dit? In my mind het ek net gedink n "Tiger" rod is sterk en nou is ek bang om n 1oz Jig op die lyn te sit...

I use a 7ft MH nexave (lighter than the tiger version) for my bass, shad and estuary fishing etc.. I've had that rod for probably 10 years and it has caught hundreds of fish. From rockcods to bass to small rays, cob, little TK kingies, many leerie up to 4kg, blacktails, gallies, you name it- it has caught it. Snapped the tip in my car door once so it is now a 6'6" or so but anyway moral of the story is you can cast that rod with 1 ounce and not worry, if it breaks/cracks soon after purchase then IME shimano will swop the tip (or butt) out for you with no issues or charge. Just take it back to the store you purchased it from.

Your money is also well spent on a cheaper shimano reel, its my experience that the cheaper shimmies coffee grinders last longer and are more robustly built than the mid range daiwas. Sorry daiwa, when I layed out a bunch of cash on a "nice" daiwa it didn't even get to land me a fish before it gave up on me on a fishing trip in the tropics, the agents left me with a sour taste in my mouth when they billed me afterwards for the repairs and parts under warranty (which the tackle shop paid out of embarrassment and good service). That said, the daiwa rods I have used/own though are great, I love them, their multipliers are bulletproof, their braid is good stuff but their cheaper grinders I'm not so sure on.

Sounds like you got a great combo. I have both the Sienna and Symetre 4000 and although the latter is smoother I love the sienna. Bulletproof, rugged and easy to clean and not worry about if it gets banged up a bit.

Have fun and enjoy it.

I actually bought the Daiwa Laguna 7.6ft the day before I found the Nexave. Took it back immediately
