I have an old penn jigmaster 500 which is damaged very badly. The plastic side is cracked and the metal frame is bent.

Where can I find replacement parts for this reel? Is it worth it trying to fix this reel or should I chuck it away?

I would like to use it as a reel for trolling.

Hiya

Johan, the jigmaster was a legendary reel in its day!! I remember my uncle fishing with a 500S, the one that screws loose on the LEFT side. The bakelite spools were known to pop under pressure and i had mine fitted with a graphite spool and teflon bushes. There were also a number of conversions we did. The Penn 99 uses the same side plates, just the bars came from a penn 49 and the spool was a penn99 spool. AWESOME casting reel in its day!!

With todays Okuma's and Daiwa's firewolfs and even Simano's TLD20/40S reels, its very easy to get a decent trolling reel for R300-R600. If the frame is bent AND the side-plate is broke, don't bother fixing it!!

If you like, i have some penn style reels at home that i don't use. They'll work perfectly for trolling. You're more than welcome to have them!! I'll be back in SA first week in December, just come collect them!!

Regards

Not my favorite reel, but very popular in the US still today. I am sure you'll be able to source parts for it if you want to spend the money.

Miles, you are absolutely right. That reel is R550 new and the replacement part is R125. Given that the reel is in very bad overall shape its just not worth it fixing it.

When you get back I will contact you and buy some of those reels off you! But first you are coming with on my boat for some fishing!!

Unless you really want to fix it, you might want to consider buying a second hand one for R 400 - R 500? Or even less? New ones, check Basil Manning's site, they are about R 700 +/-??? I am sure if you do a search on Gumtree/BidorBuy/Junkmail you might find a good secondhand reel. Where to you want to do trolling?

Purefishings service is pretty pathetic.
i should know, i gave up after 10 months of trying to get parts out of them, all i got from them were lies and excuses. the last couple of those months fritz's helped me out but even so purefishing didnt cough up so i decided it was time to move on and bought a new real.
But if anyone can help you, FRITZABU can.

my opinion, if you want to redeam that 500 jigmaster, hit up a few second hand shops, cash crusaders etc.those 500's are common place at those shops. get a bust up one and scavenge the parts.

otherwise i would buy a new one, as miles said.

Thanks for the headsup Metrofail, ive only been trying for a week but starting to get the same impression. I got the parts i am looking for at Goodwood sport, so i'm sorted. However seems PENN SA only wants to sell new reels and not interested in supplying parts or aftersales service. Oom Koos at Goodwood sports are still old school and understands fishermans sentiment. Thanks Oom Koos.

Lucky you got out of that early Valk.

the "its coming next week" or "the container of parts is on the way".... if i had a rand for every time i heard that one, haha

i have spoken to many tackle shop owners.
some even refuse to deal with purefishing and just the mention of their name is usually greated with a sigh and some sort of complaint.

that company really needs to shape up or loose their Penn distribution rights.

also Valk i recommend joining alantani.com, the reel repair forum, serious penn guru's and they can get or help you get any part you need. also very friendly and helpfull... if you ever get really stuck with a Penn part again and no one in SA can help.. they can
