Ok guys, I have a silly question.
A lot of people swear by circle hooks and some don't use them.
I am one of the J-hook people, who is very sceptical of the weird shape of circle hooks.
After hearing that circle hooks were magic and never miss, blah blah blah, I decided to try it out.
The first time ever, that I tried a circle, within an hour, I had a massive pickup, but I barely started putting pressure on the line and it hooked off. With lots of swearing, the circle was cut off and my normal double J-hooks put back on, and hoping the fish would return, which it didn't. I was furious at the circle for losing such a fish, while I am sure the 2x J-hooks would have securely hooked.
After a long time, I felt that I should try the circles again, just to see. I was on with a big Steenbras, I think, for about 5 minutes and it hooked off. Needless to say, I have no faith in circles, since then.
My questions are:
Does circles work better for certain species and for others, J is better?
Is J or circle better in general?
Because of the narrow gap in a circle, do one have to increase your hook size when you use a circle? For example a 3/0 J-hook, but for similar fish or species, you use a 5/0 circle?
Please give me your input, I would really appreciate some ideas and explanations. If circles are as good as they are said to be, then I would like to give them the benefit of the doubt, but not at the expense of losing a bunch of big fish.
Thanks.
