Hi There S/L,

What in your opinion is the lowest diameter leader line I can get away with when fishing P4's with a mainline of XX 7lbs and 5lbs?

My rod action is between 3.5 and 4.0 (I think)

I'm currently using something like 17/18lbs.

Any suggestions are welcome.

P4 power casting then nothing less than 0.35mm in diameter, it's not to do with the strength but the shock absorbing and damage sustained in the continued casting of a bigger weight.

Fully agree E,

 

Thicker leader will not affect the fish when fishing max, will cast with confidence and will minimize line cuts (a bugger when fishing at distance for the whole day (or a SA's)).  Personally fish with Diamond 20lb (0.33) for normal fishing and Double XX 27lb (0.425) when fishing max.

What is the ideal length of a leader? I'm using 6.8kg mainline and a 16kg leader, also how long should the line be when casting, i.e. Bom in line with reel...

Maximum leader length for com is 2 x rod length

Good rule of thumb is from reel out of tip back to reel

Ideal is when bol is hanging in casting position that leader is 3 turns on the reel

Mine. I have spare spools and only fish Shimano 10'000s so I pre tie my leaders on the reel and wind the leader up 32 turns on the spool

As for how far to hang the drop, each rod differs, the stiffer the rod the longer the drop.

DC down to 1st guide on the rod ie over 1m conoflex magnum fiberglass rod about 40-50cm
