Doc,.
Great to hear of your success on the Hammers.Although in recent years I have become a very laid-back,not even once a year Kite-angler,I may be able to offer some advice.First off,the fact that you are getting hammers may be ascribed to you having your baits out anything between 200-300 meters, and possibly in areas with scattered subsurface reefs.
The reason why I say that, is because that is what the guys a bit North of you are also getting on the baits that they are paddling out to more or less that distance.

Secondly it may be that your baits/rig is set up that it is high in the water collumn.Hammers like i.e. chokka baits ,that are floated as high as possible.Lastly it may be that you kite-fish on a Westerly which would likely have been preceeded by a couple of days of North-Easterly,which in turn cooled the water and this seems a good time/temperature for Hammers.

Places that you may want to try could well include, The Blocks at Sheppie,The Point at Sunwich Port, and possibly Stiebel Rocks.A possible Problem with Stiebel on a S/Westerly could be the shark-nets or baited hook-Buoys to the North of the Rocks. It should however, be a great spot from May to end July when you have off-shores from early evening right through to approximately 9/10 o clock next day. These could include winds that are N/W,W,WSW,and SW.
A chat to ski-boats anglers could possibly yield info on where the nearest-to-shore spot is, where they actually get Couta and possibly other Game-fish.
Cheers

Longer trace, fish deeper down, fish deeper in sea. Let spool about 6 - 800m of line and let it hang there. Also use bigger baits, anything from 1,5kg to 15kg bait. Then you will catch the BIG ONE!!!!!!!

My Father fishes the Umkomaas area during the kite season, he has had a few grey shark hookups and has landed a few 5kg rockcod off Umkomaas, he generally uses macs as the primary bait.

@kitefisher - I often join him on the weekends, I generally throw baits while the kite is out, he too is in search of a cuda on kite, hence the choice of sugar mac baits, however i think he may be fishing a bit too close from what I gather he also fishes about 300m out.
Have you had any successes at Umkomaas?
What are the good spots North Coast to put a kite up?
He use to put the kite up at Bluff, but use to get chased due to the close proximity to the airport, what is the radius etc must one be out of the airport range in order to be put up to avoid this issue?

Planning on going Tugela for a weekend next weekend hopefully can get a nice Zambi on kite or something.

@Kitefisher - Very interesting read, reading your posts my father uses nothing near the gear you use,

He owns a Senator 12/0 but mainly uses his solid wood KP, however he has about 1200m of 45lb braid on the reel with his kite line @ 35lb (200m) then he has his trace line which rarely exceeds 1mm.

But reading up on your previous posts, may get him to beef up his gear in search of the 100kg sharks... guess his facet of fishing would fall under light tackle kitefishing...

Wouter,no need to change a thing.Let him(and you)use whatever you are comfortable with, nothing is cast in stone. To be very honest I also prefer lighter, with most disciplines,as long as it is not detrimental to the fish I catch.(dont want to catch a Grey sharkie, with the intent to release again on tackle that takes way longer than necessary).Again not that one can always predict what will pick up your bait, anyway I think you get what I mean. Also dont underestimate a KP when it comes to torque, and even retrieval per handle turn especially on the bigger diameter ones.
Most important,have fun.
