Hi guys I'm hoping to start my first lure mould next week. My air brush kit arrived recently and am hoping for all my casting resins, RTV silicones, timber, tools etc to arrive in the next day or two.

I have attached a pic of a Walla Walla head that I'm going to try reproduce. I want to cast the head out of resin and cast a soft plastic body about 200mm long. I'll have to fill the body with all sorts of reflective fillers.

I know it's ambitious for a first lure, but I hope to make a standard head with interchangeable, different colour bodies. How I'll connect the two & still allow for the hooks in the body hasn't quite been established yet.

I'm really going to call for any advice you guys can offer, as well as better pictures of walla walla if you have.

They just make such good couta bait I thought why not try a vertical jigging lure, similar to that of vertical spooning from a boat. A weighted head to pull the lure down & cause the swimming motion in the tail.

Any Ideas, major flaws in my though. I'll post photos of the mould, design and other bits and pieces as I go along. It might take a few weeks or longer to complete. I'd like to make 3 different colour heads & eyes and 10 or so different soft bodies so that I can try them out in December when I'm home.

Wish me luck.

What I like is your ambition.

Do it. I believe if you take on easy projects you won't challenge yourself or learn anything.

You've got help on the other side as well as here. Where's the problem?.

Rob, I'm as excited as you are.

Good luck and enjoy it.

No pressure to produce immediately 'Hoor".

Thanks mate, you know you're to blame for this, your posts got me started. Anyhow I'm very excited. Please share any ideas as to how I can interlock the soft body to the head allowing the bodies to be interchangeable without the hooks getting in the way.

I'm on night shift for the next for nights so I'll have plenty of time to think, draw and try get it right, then start next week sometime.

Ok so I eventually got my little workshop sorted out and over the next 3 or so posts will show you how the first stage of the cutlass fish project is going.

Then I decided to try make my lure blank out of modelling clay. At least you can add more clay once you make a mistake.

This was the clay I used, and so far it worked out pretty well, it's very easy to model and has fibres in it to strengthen the model.

it took a few hours but once I got the hang of it, things went pretty smoothly. I managed to end up with something that sort of resembles a fish / dolphin / disting.

The final step for now was to spray the model black so that it highlighted the high and low spots. Tomorrow I will remove the sticks and lightly sand. I'll then fill any spots that need filling.

Thereafter I will give it another coat of black paint to see how smooth it is.

I might just make a few changes. That's the nice thing about using modelling clay, you can add if you need and change the original shape.

Although it doesn't look like the cutlass in the first post, it's good enough. Once it's finished and has some eyes, colour and the soft plastic body, it should look ok.

Rob, I have to say I'm very impressed.

Nice setup.

I really like your work and if that's the first one then there are big things coming.

You have a talent there and you'll do backflips when you catch your first fish off that.

I'm putting my order in now.

When I get a SIZA and they asked what bait I used the answer will be "Klipdrift".
