Good morning. As far as I know you are permitted to take across the border. I'm not sure what the hard and fast rule is, but we travelled from CT in February last year and took all our bait with. If you do get stopped and asked to offload, then producing your purchase slips from the tackle/bait shop with a breakdown should be sufficient to convince them that you are not illegally exporting contraband. If you happen to come across a border official having a bad day.... it's possible they may find some reason to keep the bait (pilchard and squid can be appealing to these guys) so please don't take my word for it. I suppose what I'm trying to say is that there is an an element of risk involved if you take the chance. Good quality bait was available in Henties when we were there at the time but not sure how reliable the source is.

Hi guys.

You are permitted to take bait across the border.
Produce your purchase slips or even better a receipt in A4 format from the tackle/bait shop is good enough.
Be nice and helpful to the Border Officials if they stop you and have the documentation on hand.
The process normally includes a quick peek, but if you are difficult with them they tend to take longer going through all your bait!

Good quality bait is available in Henties but there times when its not great, so we eliminate the risk and get everything fresh from ZA!
White Mussel however you can get fresh in Henties just make sure you have the necessary permits and know your daily limits.

Here's a little recon on documentation that we take:

A) Fish Import License (from Nam to ZA)
1. Copy of Certified ID
2. Complete Import Papers
3. R505 per license
4. To be decided how many are needed per car
5. This allows for 10 fish per Specie per person

B) Namibian Fishing License: Get in Nam

C) Papers needed for Car or Trailer (Border Letter):
1. Valid passport
2. Certified copy of Vehicle/Trailer Registration
3. Letter of Authority from Vehicle/Trailer owner
4. Letter of Authority From Bank if Vehicle is Financed.
5. Valid Drivers License
6. ZA Sticker (Trailer & Vehicle0
7. Motor Insurance Certificate, (obtainable from border free of charge.)
8. Declare to Insurance Company that Vehicle/Trailer will be out of ZA for period of Trip.
9. Give details of nominated drivers to bank (I.D./ Certified Drivers License/ Code)
10. Give all details to Insurance as with point (8) but ID and drivers need to be Certified Copies.

A little help on Bait Requirements: (based on 1x car 9 days)
1. Pilchard: 60kg (40 boxes x 1.5kg)
2. Squid: 8kg
3. Occy: 2kg
4. White Mussel: 400
