Have you noticed that fisherfolk are not allowed to fish off the wharfside or piers at the entrance to the Durban port.  Fisherfolk attempting to fish from these areas are treated like criminals; harassed and on occassion arrested.  Should we all not join the fight to get non operational port areas open to fisher folk?

Hi Mustad, in fact there is no fishing allowed on the piers guarding the harbour mouth. It has been that way for nigh on 5 years now and fishing is being considered by the authorities. Unfortunately, the idiots that bribe security guards and sneak onto either pier are jeopardizing the possibility of permission being given.

Technically, no matter how you try and justify the activity, the fact remains that any one fishing there is trespassing on a private property.....so do not feel surprised if you get treated like a criminal. Not only that, but it is lessening the chances of the authorities ever allowing official fishing here.

Hi Fish4Fun,      Authorities have no interest in allowing fishing within the Durban Harbour.   They are only interested in the economic benefit they derive from the Durban Bay.   We as fisher folk need to put them under pressure so that they allow us to fish there.   In case you are not aware the KZNSFF are in discussion with the authorities in this regards.  The KZNSFF needs support of all anglers if they are to win this battle.      When successful, the angling fraternity will be the winners.

My friend unfortunately after the 911 incident, the Harbour authorities where forced to impliment strict control measures to ensure the safety of international vessels in its ports. Also fishermen where hindering port operations by being in the way with cars parked on wharfs, so the crains couldnt get to ships and dirt everywhere.

This unfortunately meant an end to fishing from the wharfs.

The person who implements these rules is the Harbour captain and its at his discression to even allow small craft to fish or not to fish in the harbour.

I know its a contentious issue, but its a revenue generating port or a working port.

To try have them over turn their decision is really going to be difficult.

Rather chanel your efforts into allowing you to fish the center bank or say from the Bluff fishing clubs to the start of the container terminal (The old royal Zulu docking)

Hi Michael,  The impact of 911 should never have impacted fishing in the Durban Bay.  In case you not aware, fishing was taking place in the Durban Bay long after the 911 incident.  Besides, fishing is allowed in New York Harbour so why should South African fisher folk be deprived.    KZNSFF have not accepted this decision by the authorities and are in dialogue with authorities.     So, if you are keen to see the Durban Bay open to fishing from non port operational areas (where cargo handling takes place), then join us by showing your support.  Also get you associates and families involved.

looks like we might be making some headway, the authorities are relooking at the fishing ban and looking to open up certain areas for fishing in the harbour area.

They reported on the radio last friday that the Port Captain was still looking into opening South pier again. Then later they mention that the fishermen will need permits to fish there and that permits had already been sold, but only in chatsworth????????????? This opens another can of worms :fbash

Indeed, someone probably managed to 'strike a deal'. I've been down to the harbor a few times to cast a fly when conditions aren't favorable elsewhere.. disgusting to say the least, visited the Bat centre and Wilsons area. It's more about substance abuse/subsistence and illegal poaching of crackers/undersized fish than recreational fishing. More likely to catch some sort of disease. The 'fisher folk' leave these areas in a state that makes it unpleasant and embarrassing to be associated with fishing. Come on guys, keep it tidy.. I don't want to generalize, but if everyone does their part, maybe we can all enjoy a nice Sunday afternoon at the wharf..

I am in full agreement with Juno. Come on fisher folk let's keep it tidy. This may mean that we some times have to clean after other fisher folk too. Let's just do as it will start to turn around the general public's perception of fisher folk.

That's always been the problem in the past. It's more of a piss hole than a fishing hole on the piers.

I say weld the gates closed!

Sorry but they wont keep it tidy and they will keep throwing their rubbish and booze bottles around and into the bay if allowed. I've been in the bay with my family and some idiot stands there peeing for everyone to see while his buddy throws bottles. Nothing will change.

HI Bennie Jordaan,   you are quite right.  Just think about what you say and the club you belong to are the only people who enjoyed the "privelege" of fishing in the Durban Bay so I wonder who you were seeing peeing in the bay and throwing their filth around.  Certainly not me cause I was not allowed to be there.   ALso agree they have not been keeping it clean so "they" should be kicked out and people who have been denied fishing access should be given a chance to show how to do it.  Although we have no access, we have already starting cleaing up.

Guys, where other than South Pier does the Transnet permit allow one to fish?
I see as you come into Grunter gully there is still a no fishing sign up. Does having a Transnet permit overrule this sign?

Grunter Gulley is indeed opened to fishing.  Thanks to the KZN Subsistence Fishermens Forum members who stood by their leaders and refused to move until an amicalbe solution was reached

I realy hope the guys can keep it clean and tidy.

Take note of what happened with the beachfront piers after a long struggle to get them opened during the eighties. I sat in many a meeting and workshop with the Dept of recreation.

The council used the Soccer world cup to their advantage and re closed the BENCH and BaY OF Plenty Piers.

Unfortunately there are bad elements in our sport that ruin things for others.

Thanks for the support Cobia.  I am still at my wits end on what to do with the bad elements.  Why can fisher folk simply take their dirt with them.  I wonder what will happen when North Pier is opened.  HELP WE NEED MORE CLEN FISHER FOLK!!!!!!
