Guys, help please...
I'm trying to do some home repairs, changing eyes on some old rods... anyone know what is the name/type of the varnish/ epoxy resin that the pro's use when re-attaching eyes onto the rod? Whats it called and where to get it?
Any help appreciated....

Reefman, I have no idea. Try n send a Private Message to MickJack, I know he has built a rod or two. Also look at the fishing rod links.

Flexcote is the stuff that is commonly used to build up the wraps on the rod. Is hard to obtain here, but a very good local substitute that I use (@ 1/3rd of the price) is Kraftex Pratiglow.

If you get stuck PM me.

Howzit guys. Personally i wouldnt go with the Pratiglo, as i have used it before. Reason for not using it because it tends to fall to one side. ( its a bit difficult to explain if dont rebuild rods). The rod has to be consistenly rotating or else its gonna end up like crap. All that hard work after binding the eyes, you dont want an unpleasant rod. I suggest you use Quickset clear also by the same guys who do the Pratiglo. When applying to the binding , use your fingers ( wet them ) to give you a professional finish. Done many rods this way. Just my 2 cents. Anyways good luck

Diesel, I've been using the Quickset clear up til now... I find it's fine for guides, being only a small amount necessary; but on custom graphics and wrapping on the butt section, where a larger area needs to be covered, I find that it sets too quickly and 'yellows' quite badly, distorting the colours underneath?

Hello Reefman,

I have used Plascon (I think) Glatex 8 in the past, coating entire rods and had no yellowing or the likes, also used it on the bindings. You have a fair amount of time after mixing to apply and it can be sprayed too. It dries crystal clear and seems pretty UV resistant.

Cheers

Bob any hardware store has it... PRATLEYS QUIKSET CLEAR - it's an Epoxy Resin. Once you've mixed this stuff, you need to work quickly, because it sets quickly. Sets rock hard, it's the best glue I know! Fixes everything. If you're painting it on, which is the best way(??), you need to have a really good solvent to clean the brushes. I use disposable ones, so it's not an issue, but I'm not sure whether Turps will clean??? Help guys?
