mountain adventures and a 2 lost 16/0 circles
After a disappointing morning session at the reefs we head off to the beaches ending up at blaasgat... and being sandblasted as we get there, a decision is made... “ons gaan berg toe”
On arriving at the mountain things look pretty dead after all its southeast!!!
So we drive a bit further in search of a activated spot with color and working swell... not too long into the search we end up at a good favorite spot and with a little walk and climb we reach it in blistering sun and wind protected, any breeze could do know

Armand puts out a head throw bait and (finds a crevice and dozes off) gets a run after about an hour, fish leaps... into the air and spins, well this is where the hooks pull! Eina j hooks... “se maar niks, jy weet j hoeke trek”

The same bait goes out but on a 16/0 tuna circle... 10 mins in and vas!... and so begins a tussle but ended as soon as it started...eina he gets run onto a reef and pop.Oom Earl watches as Armand walks back, cant rig up lost too much mainline... After that it is quiet for a while

We decide to stick it till sunset desperate for a pull...

OUT goes a fresh Sarda Sarda head throw bait (I’m glad i was able to put this shot our as the head felt a bit heavy) rigged on a 16/0 tuna circle and 175lbs full steel trace... now the wait

Rod bumps, reel screams... game on at 19:15

Slowly tighten up as the fish turned and takes a solid run southwest taking off all of the 280m 0.55topshot xx followed by about 350-400m of 48lbs gaitor... getting close to the drum! Tighten up and the fish comes to a rest after 15mins...winning back inches of lines proved difficult as the wind assisted the fish when running parallel to the mountain and facing a possible cut off i decide this fish needs to get line in order to swim out west.

in the meantime we spot another bronzie cruising the top water

It works and i gain back more and more inches and meters and so it goes she takes 150-200m I gain 125 to 150m meters finally after an hour I can see the mono knot approaching Only to see it go again and disappear into the darkness.

20:10
Its not to difficult to follow the fish on the mountain outline but with The sun no gone, the fear of a sudden directional change resulting in a cut off sets in... but nevertheless the tussle goes on.

Nou begin ons gesels...

Its a white?
Noooo its a pylie, but i insist it runs like a non flat fish, suddenly the mainline appears as the fish heads west in direction cape point and then northwest, im thinking wrong move fish its now easier to pull you, but the fish is searching frantically for a rock or reef to cut me.

21:05
Mainline now back on the drum and i am relieved and we ready the gaff , really no option the swells are up every 12-15mins a set bashes the rocks... only to see the fish move back into braid... now we start chatting again
Maybe its a cobbie that was chowed by a bronzie who was then chomped by a white...

Now the fish runs north and then finally at about
21:50 the line comes in nicely the fish has given in.

NOPE NOT... it runs out again and again every time rejuvenating itself in the oxygenated wash

22:00

Armand leaves to fetch water from the cars... and in his absence i pull the fish to within 20-25 m of landing it and the wind gusts again... churning up thee top layer, and there she runs to the left south again parallel to the mountain ---- BACK into BRAID-----

This fisha aint giving up...
With Armand back i decide to pull the fish back so we can go home, we last ate at 11am kfc at strand slip! I tell the guys we will have supper soon and we think maybe Mr Delivery must deliver?

22:30

Almost there the fish comes in nicely again the winds gusts and energises the fish and there she goes...

Its dark and not easy to see the full moon ius rising on the northeast side and really makes things easier, but the idea of following the fish to a protected bay to land seems a bit dangerous, this is an option... go land the fish where there is less gusting.

But im tired? Fishing since 8am, no powerbars and USN shakes to help here... so i stick it out

22:45
In again but really close this time, i take a pic of the reel peeling off again.
Now the fish has run full circle exploring all options to outwit me, and it heads south again? Maybe it likes going south... almost 22:55 and...

23:00

The dreaded and feared happens

I fell line line pulling on a reef/rock/kelp and notice the fish has come close to the mountain running parallel and finding a rock... snap game over

was so hoping to get it onto the rocks whether a bronzie or a pylie or even a 15kg cob ...

0.6 line and pull the skeleton out of the fish

Hectic fight and pitty about the fish getting off. You will get him next time.

I lost a big fish two nights ago in gericks point. As I read your story its like I'm there again, heart beating, nurves running wild, adreniline rushing and bang fish runs in the reef, vas. After 20min no way the line is coming loose and off it snaps.

My stomach turned when I got to the end of the story just the same feeling I has there when it happend to me.

It makes us wana be back again to test our skills..
