Dave a Torium 30 with 50lbs backing and 0.55 topshot will be fine to drop baits at 250-500m

Remember that dropped kite baits work just as well for Edible's. I've caught some size kob in false bay and Spreeuwalle with chokka blobs dropped 400-500m off the beach.
Thanks for the advise. The more I read this post the more I wanna get into kite fishing as it allows one to fish where you cant normally fish. @Enigma expect allot more questions to head your way like the following: If I bought the windsong 650mmx650mm and the 1mx1m kite what sort of wind speeds would you use each in if you were taking out a 2kg bait?

Haven't measured windspeeds but if it's a light breeze i use the 1m kite and if it is still lighter I attach a helium balloon to the back.

If it is a strong wind then I use the 65cm and if it is a gale then the 45cm

Set the tack that it is not pulling square to the wind when the wind speed is high so there is more lift than pull and set the kite square to the wind with little tack when the wind is low

I have sent out 10kg baits on the small kite.

It all depends on water action and wind speed etc. if there is a strong wave action and light wind then you can't drop to big a bait as you cannot set the clip to tight as there isn't enough wind to strike against

Ideal is a place like st Francis on a flat sea with a pumping Westerly, set the clip to 2.5kg, hang a 5kg grey on the kite, send it out skipping across the water, when at desired distance stop the fishing reel and leave kite till it stops moving at this stage it'll lift the grey 10-20m out of the water, reel the fishing reel tight and strike and watch the grey do a 20m belly flop and wait.

Hi enigma
what line do you use to fly your kite(s)?
I have 140lb braid for my kite, will that crack it in the long run?

I use 100m of 0.60mm between the kite and the outrigger clip then nylon down to my 50lbs Jerry Brown Backing.

I have a Torium 50 with power handle for the kite. Remember you tack the kite for direction and then obviously for lift or pulling so even in a wild wind you won't be at risk of popping the 50lbs braid.

You need to go as light as possible to keep the line out of the water. 140lbs braid is going to be thick and soak up a lot of water and when you are sending a bait out 500m at least 400m of that line is dragging in the water.
Thanks for the heads up. does the 100m 0.60mm work for all wind where ever? because i have been wondering at what height the kite should be set. im quite scared about loosing my kite so i bought 140lb braid, which i have measured at the round, with a decent set of digital calipers, to nears at makes no difference 0.60mm.

i have also seen a dropper rig, where the down rigger clip was connected to the base of a 10m length of line comming off the main kite line. which may help keep the main line out of the water.

i will give the 140lb a spin, if it drags i will take it off and use a backing on an 80w im currently saving for. then i will grab some 50lb for my kite line, im going using a senator 12/0 to fly my kite.

i have an Okuma Titus t50 on a 9' 50/30 boat rod for my main line, spooled with 500m of 50lb braid and 600m of 55lb awa shima top shot. i havent decided what leader to use just yet.

Kite leader, minimum 1.8m and if off of rough rocky terrain just use 15-20m leader to a 3/0 Jap power swivel and 3m 440lbs 49 strand cable with either 14/0 J's or 20/0 circle.

No need for a Gaff, when you get to the windon it's as good as a Gaff in the mouth.

@Enigma I see that some guys use 2.5mm wind-on leaders, now what sort of lb Dacron would one need for the 2.5mm to fit nice and tightly into.

200lbs dacron or 500lbs jerry brown for up to 3mm.

With such heavy stuff you only have to use a single splice.

here is a release clip i made it is made from solid metal bar,2 springs and 4 ball bearings. on the side is adjusting screws to adjust the tension for difrent bait sizes.

the toothpick is only there for size comparison

@skieppie I use a elbe yellowtail on my small kite and it works fine although I haven't quite tested it in gail force winds so maybe give it a try.

@Dave I use a 10inch kp reel with a drag function and it works like a bomb and is cheap. If you only want to drop baits I would really consider this option. The 65cm windsong kite is a nice all round kite and I use it 90 percent of the time.

Great looking clip and pretty sure, in fact dead sure it will work.

To work 100% you would need 2 anchor points ie. one at each end to hold it square in the release strike.

Enigma you mention spreeuwalle, have you had much success with the bronzies there?Really going to make it my mission to catch a nice bronzie there this summer. With the south easter I rekon I may be able to get the kite out far enough there.Any bait you might know the baan bronzies might like? Was thinking a hound head will be tops?

Tackle I would suggest (and have either seen or used myself to great effect)

Reel, TLD 50 or Trini best option for big fish of the wild coast is a Tiagra 80SW. For edibles or big fish you need a stron reel as it's going to work hard with long range retrieves and heavy loads so for eds TLD 25 or Torium 50

Line or braid, recommend 80lbs braid with 0.60-0.80mm mainline as it's a lot of line out and can take a hammering with the work and load it is subjected to.
Hello Enigma

An Okuma Makaira 80W is on its was to me, same size as a tiagra 80W, to fight the big in-eds ::S::S
how would you spool this reel??
im thinking 1000m of 100lb 8 weave braid backing with 80lb top shot??? im thinking about using awa shima 80lb or heavier, since i can get more of that on with a slightly lower awa shima diameter.

The reel is going to be fitted to my 7' 2" 80lb all rollers stand up rod. i may change up to a 300/8 in the future. but i suppose this set-up can also be used from some serious deep sea angling if i get the chance.
