good day all. i want to go in to the kite fishing direction but have no idea about the equipment that is used for this fishing stile.

i already have 2x 1.85 elbe yellowtale rods (the idea is to use 2 x penn 49 reels with the rods) can anybody tell me if i am in the right direction or is the equipment that is mentioned not strong enough. hope somebody can help me out here.

Howzit!!!

The penn 49 will def not work for kite fishing and i reckon the rods are way too pap,why do you want to use the short rods???Normal stiff boat  rods will probably work from the surf but is not a good option for rock fishing.

grab yourself a king fisher posiedon strikeforce rod, the one rated to 30-50kg's that will crack it. and they will only set you back about R200-R250. im too poor for a full roller 80lb stand up rod

as for reels, try grab a senator 9/0. but make sure it is in one piece, because with the Penn agent in this country you are more likely to win the lotto than them to get you spare parts. a torium 50 size multiplier or bigger will do, even a 30w if you can get one cheap. basically the bigger the better. quite a few guys use Penn Senators in 10/0 or bigger loaded with heavy dacron or braid to fly the kites.

A separate reel to fish the trace/rig, connected to the kite by a downrigger clip or variant there of. a torium 50 with braid backing and topshot to about 700-1200m total line will do

www.mullerskitefishing.com and get yourself a seagull kite
mulllers also sell the kite line for a good price.

This is an interesting series of video's on kite fishing with some very good tips. we dont kite long lines or kontiki rigs in SA but the principles in the vid are the same. There are 5 vids in this series: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjDznk_CTlk

We only fish to max 500m off shore here in SA with a kite not like in those New Zealand vids where guys are swimming live baits 1500m off shore for marlin and stuff

you should research further but that's a start.

for cheap bulk braid, go DHgate.com and use a seller called "mumu9r-fishing"
they own a braid factory shop and they make pretty decent braid for unbeatable prices, though, it does take an age for it to be posted to our neck of the woods (3-8 weeks).
i bought their 140lb braid and im quite impressed with it. good line for kite flying. and it was only about R400 for 1000m all inclusive last i recall

As mentioned, keep away from small boat rods if you going to fish off the rocks such as the Wild Coast

2 ways of fishing and one is to drop a bait and the other is to have the bait attached to the kite

Tackle I would suggest (and have either seen or used myself to great effect)

Reel, TLD 50 or Trini best option for big fish of the wild coast is a Tiagra 80SW. For edibles or big fish you need a stron reel as it's going to work hard with long range retrieves and heavy loads so for eds TLD 25 or Torium 50

Rod, of the beach any 50lbs rod for the rocks a typical Swimbait rod ie. HMG Shark Extreme heavy, 300/8 purglas with roller guides

Line or braid, recommend 80lbs braid with 0.60-0.80mm mainline as it's a lot of line out and can take a hammering with the work and load it is subjected to.

Kites. I use the www.windsongkites.co.za from Shelley Beach cheapest and most functional option with a 7m x 5mm nylon ski rope tail I have the 1m low wind, 65cm standard (x3) and 45cm storm and a 35cm hurricane with carbon stays, have flown baits out in 80km wind with the tiny kite.

Pen 49 spool will pop even if you are just fishing eds as 500m of line retrieved under it's weight and maybe a kob or 2 will put to much pressure on the spool, rather look at a Scarborough but I even popped one of them in high winds.

In the Cape we don't kite bro...We float the bait out with condoms and they work like a bomb

Whats nis about it you never know when the fish will take you..wether in the shallows or out in the deep..Float out range of 200-300mtrs achieved on a light NW for FalseBay in the Cape..

Fish point with a good westerly and even at the point to the SW of the Boesmans mouth will give good access to deep water and big fish. Especially fish point where some big fish hang around all year around

I use 100m of 0.60mm between the kite and the outrigger clip then nylon down to my 50lbs Jerry Brown Backing.

I have a Torium 50 with power handle for the kite. Remember you tack the kite for direction and then obviously for lift or pulling so even in a wild wind you won't be at risk of popping the 50lbs braid.

You need to go as light as possible to keep the line out of the water. 140lbs braid is going to be thick and soak up a lot of water and when you are sending a bait out 500m at least 400m of that line is dragging in the water.

Willie you starting to scare me with your monstrous set-up. After reading this post I know I am certain of one thing. A full kite set-up for my 21st B-day. Maybee A Trynos 50II with 1000m of 80lb braid and 0.8mm topshot.

@Craig what is a cheap option for a reel to fly the kite with as well as line for the reel? I'm just looking at something temporary as I'm gonna be sending out baits no bigger than 2kg grey heads and whole yellowtail on my /8+1 and Tor 50. I'm also not planning on going out further than 300m.

Willie, some of the most biggest fights I've seen at Mazeppa and Robberg have been on Tiagra80SW on a 9-10' rod with roller guides and gimble.

80lbs whiplash and .90-1mm topshot and they also has some of the worst hidings I've seen. (also seen a few welded 14/0 Tuna hooks pulled open off the Island when the Tiagra was getting incredibly low on line)

Last year a swimbait of between 70-80kg was picked up by a huge Grey (about 400m out)ran 1200m before they stopped it (1800m 80lbs whiplash) 4.5 hours into the fight with the Grey all but beaten and on the surface. A dolphin swam into the braid and cut it off in a millisecond. I believe if there was 0.80mm mono it would most likely have prevented the cut off.

Dave a Torium 30 with 50lbs backing and 0.55 topshot will be fine to drop baits at 250-500m

Remember that dropped kite baits work just as well for Edible's. I've caught some size kob in false bay and Spreeuwalle with chokka blobs dropped 400-500m off the beach.

Thanks for the replies. What i did found is a nice penn senator 12/0 at a very good price. I want to use the short boat rod with a kp reel for the kite and i have a choice of 3 rods a 10 ft. 12 ft and a 14 ft all 3 rods is nice stiff rods. There is two styles that i want to fish one is taking the bait out via a ferry. The second one is using outrigger clips for live bait with a float. Does my setup sound right now. I am not realy a person that keep my fish

With bait ferry's the bait size is a bit limited but is a great method especially when deploying edible fish rigs

With the outrigger? Are you looking to deploy a bait under the kite to be kept under the kite till it is picked up.

If you're planning to drop it off the outrigger clip then you won't be able to do that on a float as it will be dragged everywhere. Maybe and anchored rig with the bait lifted up in the water?
