Flying high.......

This is less of a brag post and more of a thank you post.....
I have been playing around with the idea of getting a kite setup for years. I finally pulled the trigger a few months ago. The thanks goes to Enigma for answering my myriad of questions about filling the reel, the kite setup, etc, etc etc.
So after getting everything setup and dropping a few baits in borderline unfishable sea the last two weekends, Saturday offered the first real opportunity to put the kit to the test............

Being 2min from home I popped back for some lunch......but I had this nagging feeling I had to go back for one more drop......
So in a screaming 50km+ wind I dropped a bait at 200m and the kite was barely back when the TLD50II started screaming. I looked out to sea and saw the first aerial display of the blackfin before I could even get the rod out the holder. I estimated it as a 50kilo fish (I was fooled by the distance)!
Anyway I bumped the drag up to about 14kilos and the fish went ape shit!!!!! I soon realised that I was in deep kuk, with a proper blackfin giving me gears and not another soul around........nobody!!
I gave the missus a call and with some smooth talking got her to come down and second me (carrying tapes, pliers, cameras etc).
Being on my own I knew I could not deal with a green BT on my own so backed of on the drag and played a more tactical game.........I will say that it gives you massive peace of mind having 150m of .80 mono and 2mm leader when the fish starts dragging you all over the bricks!
Anyhoo.....after 2 hours I managed to work the fish to the slipway in the river mouth and leadered and tailed it on my own.
What a magic way to break in the tackle and what a magic fish to land on your own...........Thanks again to Craig for all the help!

Thanks for the mention Greg, was great chatting and better seeing the results.

Well done on the BT and the solo landing.

One thing I haven't posted on is how I modified my Kite and Swimbait Rigs. This I did because I went Extreme to land my Black Pylies over the reefs at St Francis and rigged up with a 30mm windon.

I was worried as to the threat of a fish tangled or affixed to such heavy tackle if I got cut off.

Solution....... I use a Slide rig (2mm Heavy Duty)with a heavy duty stopper rig on a thimble on the windon with the sinker attached to the ring.

This way if it snags up and the line breaks the sinker drops and the fish swims the line off thereby only having a hook trace left behind.

Works just as well with the Dinglehopper as well.

Loveliest Shark we have and I'm sure in the coming Summer Months you are going to be doing the rounds with a Zambi Greg

Very nice fish! What guides are those on your pentagon?

Those boat guides are on the Small boat rod used to fly the kite.

The Pentagon is standard PAc Bay from what I can see.

Lol it has been a long day at work didnt look properly thought they looked a bit unusual.

The pentagon has STD PAC bay guides except for the tip....there was no std tip top that would fit the dia of the blank with the first two eyes removed.........trawled around and found a diamite eye that with some stretching fitted.
I like that idea of yours Craig. I must admit I am a bit scared of the day I get jammed on a reef.....its going to be a dog show trying to break off.
The bait was a whole kob.

Been doing it a while and have learnt how to break the big line suck in the rocks.

Solution.

Get 20-30m back from the water.

Put the rod down or give to an assistant to hold the rod.

Walk forward to where you have a secure foothold and the line has a clear path into the water.

Wrap the line around your hips (hold it either side of you and wrap yourself into it) Make sure the lines don't cross or they will cut themselves off.

Walk backward, looking at the ocean, pull the line till it becomes "DEAD" ie you can feel there is no stretch.

Now sit down onto your haunches and the line will pop.

Never try using the rod and reel to do it............ let Sunil/Leon and Jo do it on the Island for 30min before sharing the trick.

They got their swimbait trace, a windon, a heap of 0,55mm lines and a slide sinker back doing it like that.
