Fibre glass repair

Ok , so accidents happen, so I will let this slide, what can one do in any case? But I am still not happy. Went fishing the other night and my fishing buddy took a novice with on a plastic kayak (we all were one at some stage)and on beaching he lost control of his kayak and then hit me hard at the front causing my kayak to separate on the join ...

I have never worked with fiber glass before.My questions are this:

1:I just put fiber over the crack and put the resin over, is there a danger of the boat leaking there or maybe separating when punching a wave or just plain separating?It feels strong though.It looks terrible also.

2: What would it cost more or less to have the boat properly fixed and maybe resprayed?

3: Anybody you know or can advise in the Helderberg or Cape town area?

Manufacturers use a variety of methods to bond the two halves of a ski together, all of the methods are internal and so once separated cannot be repaired back to "factory" spec. Your repair is strong, but as you say, ugly.

If it were my ski I would sand the patch off, re do the seam tape, see a thread about how to do that on this forum, and mask off the area of gelcoat damaged and paint on a fresh coat. Waterpaper that down and polish.

Morning guys
I repair fishing skis in my spare time , would have cut away the seam and secured the inner lip with resin and screws, then put on a new section of seam tape and filled it. Would have been neater

Hi Yellowtailer, i have a Padleyak which i would like to have a separation wall build in just behind the seat section. there is already such a wall just in front of the foot peddle area. this will create a compartment under the seat which can be filled with foam to create permanent flotation. what will such a jobby cost more or less?

I can make fibreglass bulkheads to separate the hull into waterproof sections. I thought Paddleyaks already came with bulkheads.
Please send a few closer pictures of the areas you need sealed with the hatch covers open.
The job will cost R600 and will take 2 days to complete.

sorry for the late reply. i was on a long break from work.

a bulkhead behind the seat area is exactly what i want. the padleyak only has one and that sits in front of the feet where the rudder peddles are. it provides a nice front hatch but from there it is open right to the back with only a peace of foam alight under the seat witch in my opinion is not good enough for flotation at all.

it would have been perfect if the area between the legs could have the kind of hatch that the stealth and other fishing skis have. can that also be modified on the padleyak? something like this perhaps.

Hi there, can you perhaps give me the exact width and height of the central tunnel in the ski, I can make moulds to create a wider section with a matching lid so a decent sized fish can at least fit through it.

I will need to work out my costs as this is a one off job.

Once I have the dimensions I will be able to make a diagram for you with a proposed design.
