Common problems with sliding

The original thread was moved to the Sliding section.

I'll just update it here as there is far more traffic.

So I went on my 1st sliding excursion on Saturday. We netted mullet and off to Sundays we went. Just as we arrived the SE wind started pumping. The conditions were terrible, with a strong current pulling my grapnel out the sand. I slid anyway to see if it works. I think it worked, except for maybe that my sinker and bait ended up in the river mouth due to the currents.

Then we moved to the bay. Fished off some boulders into surf, roughly 2m above the sea level. Bearing in mind the SE was PUMPING into our faces, I could not get the clip to move past roughly 15m away from me. No matter how I shook the rod, it just would not budge, dangling in the air with the fish in water. What is the problem here? Too windy? Is there a way to work around this where the wind is directly in my face?

I was actually quite saddened by that, because I managed to cast my sinker for sliding quite far against the wind. I tried to cast the mullet out and couldn't even get past the 50m mark.

1st sliding mission = FAIL

Howzit DD..

I have seen a similar thing occur a few times.  An angler in haste used the clip the wrong way, and slid it out. He only managed about 10/12m until he realized the fault. Also, weighted clips off elevated points work the best imo.

I've personally experienced a bit more hassle sliding out big baits of the surf in rough conditions. A better option would be to slide out smaller, streamlined baits in these conditions.

Another cause of it not moving is if you have a bow in your line. It will get to the lowest point and go no further, your line must be tight. More than likely the clip may have been put on the wrong way arround. The boom must be on the side you wish the bait to move, ie it must face the water, hope this helps.

Thanks gents.

I do use weighted clips and I made 100% sure that the clip was attached correctly (as per presentations on this forum). The 1st time I forgot to clip it closed, so I thought that was the problem. Well, it did the same thing with the clip closed. It was as if the wind and wave action pushed the clip and bait back toward me the whole time.

Bait used was a live mullet.
