Carp Rods

Hi All!

I am wanting to purchase my first carp rod, but very confused on what to get as there are so many options :?

I've been carp fishing for about a year now and thought it's time to get a proper carp rod and rod pod, any suggestions on what I should be looking for? I'm also not the tallest person (5.74ft) so should I rather look at a 10ft instead of a 12ft?

I'm also hoping to stay between R500 - R800

Any help would be appreciated

Many Thanks

Conventional & Specimen?
I would suggest to maybe also go to a local shop and see what they have available and also to get the feel for the different rods. What works for one might not work for another... ;)

It's difficult to gather if you're fishing specimen or normal
bank angling as you mention "rod pod" in your original
post.

There are for certain a couple of dams in the WC with
some huge speciemen carp, but if you want to be prepared
for all occasions, rather get a 12ft. Most freshwater
fishermen fish 10ft rods for short range and 12ft for in between and for
distance. Just to make your decision even more difficult,
there are some very good 10'6 and 11ft rods out there. Sensation
and shimano have some impressive offerings. Personally,
I fish with 2x shimano vengeance 11ft shad rods up to about 90m
and the shad part doesn't really fit in with freshwater? But it
works for me. As Fishpaste said, time to get to a tackle shop
and it will be making that decision on what to buy a whole lot easier.

There are some pretty knowledgeable people at Fishing Specialist,
Goodwood Sport, Paarl Pets, Tuckers and Somerset Sport should
you be buying some carp tackle.

Thanks so much for your reply, I went to Somerset Sport and bought myself a 12ft. The rod had been sitting there for 2 years so they gave me a nice deal on it. I'm ALSO using a Shimano Vengeance but the smaller one than yours.. Awesome rod! really enjoy using it!

I am currently just doing some conventional carp fishing, would love to get into specimen fishing but I can't seem to find any dams, as you will know, fishermen don't like to give away their best fishing locations.

I also found a nice rod pod there which I might go back and get next week or the week after, it's a sensation 4 rod pod with tripod legs.

When it comes to bite alarms, is it worth getting them instead of using a policeman? and I see Sportset Sport have another form of bite alarms which I hadn't seen which clips onto your actual rod and you feed the line through it (not too sure how to explain it) if you know what I'm talking about can you give me your advice on them?

Kind Regards
Michael

Get the Bite alarms, trust me they are worth every penny, ESPECIALLY when you fish at night!

Sensation has cheapo's (+/- R100 each) - they are super load if setting volume to max
