Bass in pond

Hey all

I have a nice pond (waterhole for animals actually) in which a put some kurper.

The kurpers have multiplied to about 30000!!!! LOL but anyway, I recently added two carps as well and I want to add some bass to get rid of some of the kurpers, plus it will be fun to catch some bass so close to my house (the bond is quite big, big enough to fish in.

Can you buy bass at pet shops or something like that or do you have to catch them?

Invite some of the guys, they will come and remove some of those kurper.

Damn, that will be fun!

I am not sure about the legalities but my guess would be to catch biss from the bigger dams and then to relocate them to your spot

First off you can buy fingerling. But you will have to wait for some time for them to get to a catchable size. Have a look at www.bigbass.co.za. He has a list of hatcheries that sell them. Your other option would be to transport them from bigger dams but you will need permits for them. Where about is this dam?

Its not a large dam but its large enough to catch some bass in... I stay at Lapeng Guest Lodge its near Lydenburg in the Lowveld...the only problem is the closest dam with bass is about 100km away and its hard to transport the bass so far..

The problem will not be in transporting the bass. If you have a nice big container with a good aerator they will survive. Permits I think can be obtained from Nature conservation. There is a guy on Sealine with the name GTZA. I think he might be able to point you in the right direction

The detrimental effect (alien) Carp have (in especially smaller waters) where they become overpopulated far too soon and start foraging by "rooting" on the bottom and stirring up silt and sediment to the extent that (indigenous) bream/ kurper and yellowfish (and other smaller species) and (alien) Bass are adversely affected and pressurised is well-documented and may be observed (first-hand) in many waters containing Carp.

Carp left to their own devices in most waters for any length of time would create problems for other species (muddying the water and predation on the eggs of other species) sooner rather than later and water quality and clarity will deteriorate ...

Kingfisher, I cant believe the nearest bass dam to you in the lowveld is 100kms away (the lowveld is full of small farm dams with Bass in them).
If I were you, I would find a local dam/pond, ask and get permission catch and keep about 7 or 8 fish (they don't have to be big - below 'keeper' size is fine) and just move them yourself. You can get permission from the authorities if you feel you need to, other wise a bakkie, a large container, and a pump is all you need.
Do this in two or three dams and you will have a good starting population.
Stock your private dam and have some fun at the same time.
There are some guys here at sealine who live in the Lowveld, maybe they could help?And I would agree with getting rid of the Carp

I see the law when i read this post!

My advise is that you shouldn't move the fish to your dam and for all the effort that awaits you just drive somewhere that bass already is available and catch them there.

Haha maybe I must start searching for some more bass dams! (Im more of a pap gooier).
But thanks anyways.
How fast do you guys think my carp will populate?

Some time soon Im going to fish at Klaserie Caravan Park, apparently they also have bass there. The water is quite dirty and there is a lot of structure.

Since Im a beginner in bass angling, what lures would you recommend I try first?
