Assassin Amia Rod Break

Hi guys,

so I bought an Assassin Amia 9 foot spinning rod in December and managed to break it on its first outing in Moz. The top 10-odd cm broke off the butt section. It broke on a cast, casting a 1 1/2 ounce bucktail. The rod is rated 1 1/2 ounces, so can't be overloading.

Has anyone seen a rod break like this?

Sending it back to BM for tests to see if it was due to a factory fault.

Every rod we have bought from BM has been given a huge pull test by the sales staff before we take it. The salesman almost picks up someone hanging on the the point of the rod to make sure there are no flaws in the rod. I often max the rating and some times exceed it on my Amia.

I've seen 5 Assassin rods break, one of them exactly like in your photo, which is why I don't use them. I know this will be a very unpopular opinion, as the rods are very popular - personally I feel the rods are over rated and over priced.

Yeah i like the look and feel. But to spend that much on a rod and then it breaks without even catching a fish is a very, very disappointing.

My Daiwa Exceler rod is probably 10 years old and still going strong. The only reason I wanted to replace it is because the guides were starting to come off.

I guess sometimes you' get a bad one , we have three and they get used a lot, they live in covers in tubes and get rinsed after use. A brand new rod breaking on the first cast is not a nice occurance. Did the seller stress the rod when you bought it ? Love my Amia. They were selling for R1000 at the last sale which is not expensive. My son bought Blue Roses at around R3000 each, that's expensive.

If it broke on the first cast I doubt they will dispute a warrantee exchange permitting you didn't nick it. Post a better picture of the fracture surface please. Very interested to see what is going on there. Let us know what they say.

A breakage while doing something like this will only indicate an obvious oversize defect - infant mortality. Unfortunately other defects that make it past the "rigorous factory stress test" still serve as initiator for cracks, which propagate with every cast or landed fish (cyclic load) until tears. Best to do it backwards as well to simulate the cast action. Point is, this method is not fool proof so don't let a rep tell you otherwise, especially if there is a warranty dispute.

I am sure you will be well and ably assisted by Basil Manning.

As with all brands and all models there are Breakages...... R3000 for a Blue Rose is Cheap.

I've seen a R15'000 Yamaga popping rod break on the first cast.

This is why most rod suppliers have a 3 month no questions asked replacement. Make sure you use the rod early enough after buying it, failures do occur and Assassin is a reputable and well backed brand and will sort you out
